In a recent interview with the The Dealer Playbook, I shared my perspective on how established legacy businesses can approach uncertainty and change. Here’s a short clip from the interview, where I reference Clayton Christensen’s “Innovators Dilemma” concept.   Even as we listen to (and adapt with) changing customer demands and emerging tech, established “incumbent” businesses can lose market leadership…seemingly out of nowhere. We’ve seen this over and over as small startups that begin serving small, niche customer segments and create value that galvanizes wider customer demand (think: Taxi/Uber, Blockbuster/Netflix, Kodak/Digital Camera).   Our approach has been to pay attention to new and interesting products and services at the margins. We seek out the contrarians. Businesses that operate with visions of the future that are surprisingly (even if subtly) different from conventional narratives. #innovation #smallbusiness #leadership #familybusiness

This is a snippet from 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴's Turnaround programme on the French car company, 𝗣𝗦𝗔 - the company that produces automobiles under the 𝗣𝗲𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘁 and 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗲̈𝗻 brands among others. Much of the turnaround of 𝗣𝗦𝗔 has been credited to its CEO, Carlos Tavares and once again, as in my previous posts on Idris Jala, having an understanding of the business and employee alignment are crucial in a turnaround situation. From the manager to the operator at the shop floor, employees are well aware of concepts of unit cost and the need to be competitive against countries where production costs are lower or face the prospect of extinction.
