A couple of new updates for musicians interested in exploring microtonality and tuning further: 1. Join the UnTwelve "Xenharmonic Praxis Summer Event" this year, June 20-23rd, in Conway, New Hampshire. More info: https://lnkd.in/gHifB32D 2. Try out the online microcsound interactive instrument, which uses a preloaded Ars Nova late medieval composition, but if you get a handle on the syntax of the input file, you can play around with your own doodles: https://lnkd.in/gvDhkVdH

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we will be spotlighting Interpretive Centre team members and their work! First up is Isabella, research assistant with the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre. Read her words below! Q: What do you do as a Research Assistant at the Interpretive Centre? "Much of my role is researching for upcoming exhibitions, including next year’s Lakeshore Teacher’s College and our newly opened Witnesses of the Past. My favourite part, however, is connecting with community members on Hospital History tours – I love leading tours!" Q: What is meaningful to you about Witnesses of the Past? "Witnesses of the Past prompts a change in our understanding of everyday spaces – it’s not just about Lakeshore Campus, but rather it represents the fact that everywhere we go, there is a history behind those spaces that we don’t often think about. I think it’s a meaningful experience to connect with people of the past in that way -- it’s a personal connection that you can develop simply by going down the same hallway or pausing at the same building. Witnesses is special to me because it is not just about this one space in this one time; you can apply the same way of understanding things we use in this show to other physical structures around the city we experience daily."

Is cancel culture real? If so, how can we tell if it’s getting better or worse? FIRE has the answer: the Campus Deplatforming Database, which tracks attempts to disinvite campus speakers or cancel performances, exhibits, and film screenings.

📍 Excited for the panel discussion next Thursday, 3rd October from 6 to 8 pm at Busboys and Poets on 14th Street, Washington D.C. Presenting Tim Davis who will be moderating, Carol Beane, Jon C. Cawley, and Ibrahim Al-Assil. When I am thinking of our next Science and Art Cafe talk on “Freedom”, I question how much creativity and censorship should be allowed in the realm of art and science. Creativity, by its very nature, thrives on the boundless potential of the human mind, pushing the boundaries of what is known and accepted. It is the driving force behind innovation, culture, and personal growth. However, with creative freedom comes the responsibility to consider the impact of that expression on society. Censorship, on the other hand, is often viewed as a tool for maintaining social harmony and protecting individuals from harmful or offensive content. The balance between allowing full creative freedom and imposing necessary restrictions is delicate and complex. Historically, some of the most groundbreaking works of art, technology, and music emerged from contexts where censorship was either minimal or absent. Yet, there have also been instances where the lack of regulation has led to the dissemination of harmful ideologies and misinformation. The key perhaps lies in finding a middle ground where creativity can flourish but not at the expense of societal well-being. Open dialogue, education, and ethical considerations play crucial roles in navigating this balance. Encouraging artists and creators to be mindful of their influence while also advocating for the protection of their right to express themselves freely is essential. ☮ Ultimately, the goal should be to foster an environment where creativity is not stifled by undue censorship but rather guided by principles that uphold the dignity, respect, and shared values of the community. This approach allows for a rich tapestry of expression that can inspire, challenge, and unite us all. Hear the talk and share your thoughts at the next Science and Art Cafe! Passionate Japanese language teacher, author, and presenter. Advocate for reading-driven language acquisition. Owner of JapanEasyReads Bookstore & Founder of JapanEasyReads Learning Community.
As a Languages teacher, this post makes my heart sing! Discovering the power of Comprehensible Input (CI) and proficiency-focused teaching has completely challenged my preexisting beliefs about language acquisition. Truly walking in the shoes of my beginner students has been a transformative experience. When we look at our teaching through a CI lens, our teaching becomes more inclusive for all learners, and we become more compassionate teachers.
I was invited to give a Language Lab at the CI conference of Funn (Fremdsprachen Unterrichten - Natürlich und Nachhaltig) in Frankfurt. It was a great conference, I met some nice people and I was very inspired by some of the presentations. In this video you will hear some testimonials from conference participants who tell you what their experience was and why you should go to such a conference. https://lnkd.in/eE4CuKqE Ich wurde eingeladen, ein Language Lab auf der CI-Konferenz von Funn (Fremdsprachen Unterrichten - Natürlich und Nachhaltig) in Frankfurt zu geben. Do you listen to music while diving into a tough project? Then this playlist is for you! This month, we're making big plans for University Research Week, a series of events held across campus from October 21-25. This year’s theme is "Back to Basics." Basic, or fundamental, research uncovers the core concepts for a field of study and is driven by a desire to expand knowledge. And this playlist is the perfect fuel for doing complex work: https://go.unc.edu/f8R4L Stay tuned for more research week content this month and next! #UNCResearchWeek #UNCResearch #basicscience #foundational #fundamental #unc #gdtbath

For the Final Major Project (FMP) of my second (and final) year, I was set a brief to create a game based around telling a story about a cultural/social/ethical issue. I interpreted this as a shapeshifting Hitman-style game, titled Mutant's Veil, where you play as mutant Mary-Kate who must infiltrate volatile environments to stop the production of an anti-mutant device, being created by the xenophobic society. Attached is a render of Mary-Kate, shapeshifting from her human veil into her mutant form. Her further showcase and development can be found on my ArtStation: https://lnkd.in/efdxBUKy

Teaching Assistant and PhD Researcher @ Ghent University, Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogical Sciences, Educational Sciences.
Excited to share that I recently attended the NKRF9 conference at the University of Copenhagen, where I had the opportunity to present my first paper: "Navigating the Digital Abyss: Talking Aesthetics of the Teen Tech Film." This paper is part of my ongoing PhD research on aesthetic literacy in pedagogical contexts, and focuses on how digital aesthetics—especially those influenced by online platforms like TikTok and Instagram—shape young adult films and their engagement with audiences. Through a rhetorical analysis, I explore the "teen tech film" subgenre, integrating the theories of Kenneth Burke to connect aesthetics, narrative, and identification in a digital context. Looking forward to expanding this research further and continuing the conversation on the intersection of aesthetics, film, and digital culture!

We are pleased to announce that the deadline for the submission of abstracts for the 60th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society for Cybernetics has been extended to Sunday, March 17, 2024. Please refer to the ASC 60 brochure for detailed instructions on abstract submissions. The author's guidelines are on pages 14 and onward: https://lnkd.in/ekb7PXEy You will need to create an account on our submission platform before submitting a proposal. The direct link to the account registration page is: https://lnkd.in/euYUNnkA We look forward to your proposals taking the overarching theme of the ASC's 60th Anniversary Meeting 'living cybernetics | playing language' into account and addressing at least one of the three entangled thematic strands: languaging in/for action, archiving archiving and reimagining technicity. The theme of this year's conference 'living cybernetics | playing language' suggests that cybernetic languaging, in all forms and media, shares a logic that is informed by understandings of processes of living as they exist and may exist. Playing is a means to reach out into possible futures, to initiate the not-yet-existent.
