It was a pleasure participating in the annual Big Data China conference organized by the CSIS Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics. I enjoyed the discussions of my panel "China’s Economic Stimulus: A Short-Term Fix or Path to Sustainable Recovery?" and learned tons from other panels. The Great Depression was more than an economic downturn— it shattered economies and redefined governance worldwide. From Roosevelt's New Deal to the rise of authoritarian regimes in Europe, the crisis reshaped the balance between state intervention and free markets. Could today’s economic challenges trigger similar shifts in power, policy, and societal priorities? What does history teach us about resilience in the face of global crises? Uncovering the profound effects of the Great Depression on American politics and society, this paper reveals how economic turmoil led to the rise of the Democratic Party, reshaped governance through the New Deal, and influenced global dynamics. Dive into this compelling analysis by our guest writer Tamoghna Chowdhury to understand the echoes of the past in today’s global challenges!

On 9 April 2024, SEEU presented the special issue "Media and Capitalism: Market, Culture, Power", edited by Martin Marinos and Orlin Spassov (SEEU 47.1). The debate has brought together scholars and professionals, and authors of the contributions in the special issue. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/d5VPaXca This below is the personal reflection of Irina Milutinovic (Institute of European Studies, Belgrade), who joined the webinar as discussant: "The recent research shows that in the Serbian media system, the editorial independence from commercial and owners' influence is under the highest risks. Besides, the media concentration in Serbia cannot merely be viewed through the prism of economically driven market competition principles, but rather as a government-driven process to retain its decisive influence and control over the media landscape. In such a way might also be perceived the legal return of the state into media ownership in 2023, which in the past produced a predominant state-party influence over the media, with long-term negative effects on the democratic capacity of the media and on the quality of democratic political processes in general. Finally, the biggest threats to media pluralism today come from the clientelist networks, which are formed by politicians who exercise power and by politically connected media owners that have their business interests in other sectors of the economy".
