MOTORSPORT MONDAY🏎️ —————————————————————— Welcome to this week’s post! This past week I read a great article put together on LawInSport about this year's rejection of the Andretti team application to join the F1 grid as an 11th team. In summary, although complying with the technical requirements of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), according the the FOM (Formula One Management) the Andretti team would not bring sufficient commercial value to F1 off track, would not pose a sufficient competitive risk on track and would disrupt the value distribution of current teams. As a result, their application to join the grid was ultimately rejected in January 2024. I highly recommend the article to get an in-depth analysis of the process. (Link to article: https://lnkd.in/exVukatx) ❓What can we understand from this❓ It seems it is becoming more difficult to see successful applications for a spot on the F1 grid as the championship has seen great success in the last few years, which in turn has seen its commercial growth and value skyrocket. It is becoming more difficult to satisfy technical, but more so the commercial requirements of the application process. 💬How do you think new teams wanting to enter the grid can bring more commercial value to F1 and pose a competitive risk on track in order to satisfy the requirements? I have thought it might be best for newcomers to focus on spaces F1 still lacks and see how it can offer growth in those sectors. For example, perhaps offering growth of a female audience or an audience in parts of the world where F1 has not yet reached its full potential. This could be attempted through a female-focused team (principles, engineers, etc.), female-focused sponsors, or sponsors and drivers focused from specific parts of the world where F1 aims to increase interest. Andretti focused on growing an American audience, however, with the additional 2 races that have been added to the race calendar in the US recently and the large increase of an American audience in the past few years, I can see why this was not the most convincing point to the FOM. It certainly seems like a difficult task for newcomers, but I am sure many are up to the challenge, and a legendary name like Andretti won’t give up easily! Until next Motorsport Monday🏎️! ——————————————————————— #f1 #motorsport #sportslaw #commercial #andretti

We all know motorsport is basically a sport for the rich so it’s completely natural that whoever owns Formula 1 circuits means serious business. So who owns Formula 1 circuits then? In reality, it is quite hard to pinpoint the exact owner of these circuits. It all depends on the shareholder structure of the bodies that are linked to these tracks. #WhoOwnsFormula1Circuits

THIS MAY BE THE SINGLE DUMBEST TIME TO RENEW THE CONCORDE AGREEMENT!! It’s not a time to incrementally adjust the current agreement. Instead, I believe it’s time to tear it apart and rebuild F1 from the ground up. If you think F1 is better than it’s ever been you haven’t been involved long enough. You’re a newby. You drank the Kool-Aid. Don’t get me wrong. F1 IS in a good place, but it’s far more precarious than it looks. Great businesses reinvent themselves continually and as rapidly as possible. That’s what F1 always stood for. That’s what these teams of racers and engineers live for. They have marketing depts out of necessity, not because they love glad handing sponsors around the paddock. This is not a time to expand, but a time to pause and reinvent for the long run. All the talk around the new draft is about money. We need to focus on inputs now instead of outputs. Adrian Newey, a man largely responsible for more world championships than anyone past or present recently said it best: “Don’t let the accountants control the racing” It’s time to rethink everything. For example, and I’m just touching on a long list, I’d dump the budget cap, open up the regs to innovation and if a team comes up with something cool, make them share it, don’t ban it. Limit rookies to 2 yrs. If they can’t perform up to 95% of the field, they’re out. Accelerate the super license process. Obviously, I have ideas and big opinions. I’m not alone. I’ll be sharing more soon. If you know me you know I’ve written about this before and my advice in many areas was followed by those I advised. I continue to advise and provide context. It's time for F1 to stop pretending they’re a carnival with cars and go back to the art of racing (and an unmatched fan experience) that earns them the title of “the pinnacle of Motorsport” Ever onward! #F1 #FIA #FormulaOne #ConcordeAgreement

The current situation with Sauber F1 Team, contemplating a shift from Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, raises intriguing questions. The relationship between fans and team names is delicate.
