Over the last decades, the restaurant industry has been very successful in the KSA (and in the Middle East in general). There’s been a diversification across growing segments, and also an increment in the sophistication level of operators as the penetration of chains has doubled over the last twenty years. If the brand is local there may be a struggle to set up SOPs, bring systems up to global standards, and gain traction for brand recognition. If the brand is international, there will be challenges to manage regional supply chains, achieve a successful brand translation, adapt marketing and technology, comply with customs and labor laws, and resonate with regional cultures and audiences. The hospitality business is complex, margins are shrinking, and customer loyalty is a struggle as it never was. But there’s also plenty of opportunity and paths to successfully operate in this ”new normal”. #restaurants #ksa #middleeast

48 hrs in Saudi Arabia. It’s a whirlwind trip. It’s great to be back and this time in Jeddah on the west coast. Visiting some of the beautiful restaurants that are part of the ALFA Company group that I sit on the board on. What I learned on this trip: - The benefits of blending concepts together and driving productivity improvements while increasing customer experience. Awesome work by Jonathan Norotsky and team; - How the pilgrimages of Hajj & Umrah and an F1 race can either benefit or negatively impact sales; - That orange juice is likely to continue to increase in price for the next ten years (Talal K. El Khalil wisdom #1) - How adding two pounds of ground beef, a slice of American cheese, browning a bun a little more and adding more salt and pepper can take a great burger to an amazing burger (more Donald C. Moore III time in my life always make me feel smarter). The Chicken Parmesan at Piatto is #nextlevel - The importance of collaboration and conversations from a board can help a business see the wood through the trees (Ziad Al-Tunisi’s guidance and leadership calmly sets all ships in the right direction) - How yogurt drinks are a high margin business (Talal K. El Khalil wisdom #2). Who knew? - The power and potential of #firstparty loyalty and ordering is compounded by multi-brand families through #sufra - The challenges of third party delivery profitability continue to spark intense debate and discussion and restaurants need rich strategic insight like that given today by Basil M. Al Essa

The rapid growth of Saudi Arabia's HORECA sector has exposed significant supply chain gaps, especially for SMEs. Here’s why: 1. Shift to Smaller Formats -Transition from large restaurants to niche cafés and casual dining. -Smaller restaurants need frequent, smaller deliveries. - Large traditional suppliers prefer the opposite. 2. Fragmented Supplier Relationships -Smaller restaurants must manage multiple suppliers. -Increased logistical challenges and lower priority from suppliers. 3. Delivery and Inventory Issues -Traditional suppliers focus on large, infrequent deliveries. -SMEs face long lead times, overstocking, and cash flow issues. 4. Financial Strain -Suppliers demand cash-on-delivery or short-term payment terms. -SMEs lack financing options like Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). 5. Technology Gaps -Traditional supply chains are not digitalised. -Manual processes lead to inaccuracies and inefficiencies. 6. Increased Competition -Small restaurants face higher costs and lower margins. -Fragmented supply chain hampers economies of scale. #HORECA #SupplyChain #SMEs #SaudiArabia #Jumlaty

Restaurant and Hotels sales (two segments of HORECA) were lagging behind other industries in the KSA in the last year (taking May 2024 vs May 2023 and based on POS transactions). Weakening sales and falling margins can shake confidence. But while the challenges facing the foodservice industry in the GCC are more complex than regional operators have had to deal with in the past, the right strategies can put them on the path for long-term, sustainable growth. https://lnkd.in/d_X-Ws9A #restaurants #ksa #mena

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years" is a question many of us constantly ask ourselves. Five years ago, I was working for ARAMCO and used all my savings to open TAKARA. Unfortunately, shortly after opening, COVID hit and forced us to close down. I vividly remember the words of one of our waiters, who is now one of our fearless leaders, on the day we reopened to the public. He said, "Boss, the worst is behind us. Now we will turn this place into the best restaurant in Saudi Arabia." It took TAKARA a lot of passion and hospitality to achieve just that. Today, we were honored with one of the most prestigious hospitality awards worldwide, "Best Restaurant in Saudi Arabia," by The #worldculinaryawards2024! We are accepting this recognition with humbleness and understanding of the responsibility it represents. Being "the Best" in something means that you need to always be at the top of your game, but also it means that you need to continuously challenge yourself and your team to improve and become "even better”. If there is one thing I have learned from the hospitality industry, it is that the competition is intense and everyone is always improving – and you should, too. Today, we celebrate, but from tomorrow, we have 364 days ahead to prove that we are still the best. Who knows, maybe next time we'll be among "the Best in the World." #saudivision2030 #saudimade #saudiarabia #sauditourism #saudiprojects #saudibusiness #AmbitionandProsperity #ministryofculture #ministryoftourism #takarahospitalitygroup #gea #
