Is the Beerfest dead? No, probably not. But, we are seeing signs of change. The Brewers Association is reducing the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) to three sessions from four, eliminating Saturday evening. Brewers are also being invited to pour RTD cocktails and similar beverages. The big venue, beer-only Beerfest will live on in a new iteration, with more beverage options, fewer events throughout the year, and fewer attendees. Maybe the latter is a bonus for fest-goers looking for elbow room or intimacy in their events, just not for fest organizers who budget for hordes of thirsty folks. Will you be going to GABF this year?

I think the alternative drinks thing is fine. If it makes it more appealing for friendship groups of people, then thats fantastic, because it is a social event. Those who only want RTDs or beers can drink their preferred beverage. Its no different to what used happen with people attending and only drinking IPAs or stouts etc. But what if someone who traditionally only drinks RTDs or whatever has that beer that opens their eyes to the world of craft beer. Wouldn't that be a good thing for the industry? As for dropping a session, if the remaining sessions are absolutely packed. Then I think this would be a negative. As we know long lines and tons of people dont make for a fun event. I would prefer they reduce the capacity of the sessions by upto a third to make the session more intimate and faster running. Then keep the last session for total numbers etc. I know Saturday night can be a bit of a cesspit, so perhaps the alternative is a last sunday day session?
