Do you visit the trade shows in your industry? In the jewellery business, there is a wide range of shows. Some of the biggest are naturally in the US, but there are also huge expos in Bangkok, London, Hong Kong, Italy and Istanbul. Trade shows are hugely important in our industry for showcasing new product lines and designs, as well as networking, of course. We attended the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show over the weekend and we’ll also be in Las Vegas in June. In this industry, anyone who’s anyone will be at the trade fairs. What kind of trade shows that can you visit in China? In China, there are two types of trade shows.The first type is the comprehensive trade shows.The product category will be very wide-ranged. The first type is the comprehensive trade shows. The product category will be very wide-ranged.That means you can find almost everything that you can imagine. So it will be very suitable for those people whose business is not in a specific product category or also suitable for people who want to discover product opportunities in many industries.However, the number of this kind of trade show in China is very limited.Canton Fair is the largest one with no doubt.And the second one maybe is the East China Fair. Orders periodically come in from new clients who are determining their niche and want to take their first steps by visiting China itself, on the ground, so to speak. In fact, there is no one size fits all solution for such requests. If the product niche is already defined, I recommend starting with trade shows (for example, the Canton Fair in Guangzhou or thematic ones in other cities). It’s important to arrive with pre-prepared market analysis, competitor information, and a selection of products for procurement. Additionally, having pre-calculated unit economics is crucial. I have worked with both those who came with ready figures and those who were just searching for ideas on-site: the difference in the effectiveness of the solutions they obtained is enormous. Instead of trade shows, you can find contacts of factories on Chinese B2B platforms, arrange meetings, and start your search by visiting these factories. It has happened more than once that managers on-site recommended more relevant factories worth visiting. However, if the product niche is not yet defined, the outcome of such a trip is difficult to predict. You could start with general trade shows in Guangzhou or the electronics market in Shenzhen. The focus should not be on exact prices for now, but rather on the range of goods or popular products that you can find on-site.

Product Sourcing & Procurement Initiation through Trade Fairs : Entrepreneurs seeking to setup a new business need to familiarize themselves with specifics of the Unit Economics of the business they seek to enter/expand as well as reconnoitre eventual arbitrage opportunities for the taking .. Trade Fairs provide this platform as a point of inititaion to establish a baseline understanding of the Product's Market, Suppliers, Quote comparison, ... i.e. an opportunity to assess opinions from clients and determine market potential, conduct research and evaluate competition, develop commercial structures by identifying agents and distributors, and initiating joint ventures and project partnerships. The Key Mega-event for this exercise is the Chinese Export Commodities Fair, also called the Canton Fair, held twice a year in Spring and Autumn since it's inauguration in 1957. It is China's largest trade fair, presenting complete varieties of goods from Electronics, Hardware, Automobile ancillaries to Toys, Fashion & Home Textiles. It boasts of vast attendance (250,000 in May, 2024), exhibitors (25,000) and business turnover ($22b in May, 2024; $60b in 2019 edition). Similar Expos like CeBIT in Germany & the Hong Kong Electronics Fair are key events for the Computing industry. Osaka is due to host the Expo 2025 across 6 months which will be the largest World Trade Expo. For all business guys if you are in China although maybe you are from a different country, I write these contents just to express some thoughts. I find it challenging to build long-term and sustainable business opportunities in my role as an original manufacturer and supplier to the industry despite it being a role I once excelled in it. In this time, VB's team attended multiple trade shows, including Global Sources, HKTDC, and Canton Fair, and I noticed significant changes in these exhibitions. -1. European markets seemed less enthusiastic, while North American clients appeared more rational. On the contrary, participants from countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative visited strong interest. However, in 2022 and 2023, although we also attended the Canton Fair, it was more suitable for catering to the large number of local attendees due to China's recent opening up. -2. Especially during the Canton Fair, amidst the dense crowds, there were people of various skin tones, speaking in diverse accents, wearing cheap perfumes, shouting loudly, and even wearing robes or slippers. The scene was inundated with a large number of factory salespeople aggressively expanding their resources and excessively promoting their value and time. -3. The atmosphere of trade exhibitions is becoming increasingly cheap, with a large number of leisure consumers who seem to have come here for a vacation rather than as professional buyers. The participants were based on different cultures, social contexts, languages and education levels so to be honest as a traditional manufacturer it was difficult for me to determine their ultimate intentions. Seeing this, I strongly felt that it's becoming increasingly difficult to spot professional buyers at such events. The venue was flooded with terminal consumers who wandered around like they were at a marketplace or wholesale market, displaying a casual attitude. Moreover, in terms of product innovation, it's rare to see highly competitive innovative products at these exhibitions. Usually, the products you see on B2B online platforms are sufficient, and if you obtain some free samples, there's hardly any need to come to China! This invisibly saves you valuable time and travel expenses, as well as the discomfort of being in an unfamiliar area. After all, when foreigners arrive in China, the central government seems to welcome your visit with various low thresholds, however, the restrictions imposed by local governments mean that you are still treated as a foreigner, requiring you to register in the community or entry area; otherwise, even if you have booked a hotel, it's difficult to check in unless you register in advance and have your supplier arrange it for you.
