This May is the 70th Anniversary of the UNESCO Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. Warfare has changed dramatically since WW II, as has the treatment of cultural property/heritage during conflict and crisis. What should the protection of CPP in armed conflict look like in the 21st century? What about CPP, pre-armed conflict? Where do we address grey-zone activity that threatens cultural heritage-- tangible and intangible? Most importantly, how do we become *proactive* in the protection of cultural property and cultural heritage? Why do we focus on monitoring, and documenting the destruction, instead of focusing on the prevention of destruction in the first place? #CPP #Hague54 #culturalheritage #CHX #militarytraining

My second Question and Answer About The Australian Flag. I will be posting more Q And A in the coming days, stayed tune. If you cannot wait , see it all in the Q&A in my website www.australianflags.au. Q: Our dads, and forefathers fought for the flag , why are you fostering changing the flag? A: Respecting the historical significance of the flag and the sacrifices made by our dads and forefathers is paramount. The consideration for a new flag is not meant to diminish their contributions or the importance of the existing flag. While the current flag holds immense historical value and represents the efforts of those who fought for it, the idea of a new flag is driven by the recognition that a nation, like Australia, is continuously growing and diversifying. The proposed flag seeks to embrace this evolution, past and present. The intent is not to erase history but to create a flag that reflects the diversity of Australia while acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of those who came before. It aims to foster a sense of inclusion, where every citizen, regardless of background, can see themselves represented in the national symbol. The proposal is a step toward ensuring that the flag continues to be a source of pride and unity, honouring the legacy of our dads and forefathers in the spirit of modern Australia. Australian Indigenous Proposed Flag , one of 4 proposed Flags.

'Heritage at War: Plan and Prepare' edited by myself, Mark Dunkley and Lisa Mol, out on 15th October 2024! Security can, and must, collaborate to give primacy to people and protect tangible and intangible cultural heritage under attack. The volume’s case studies highlight interdisciplinary efforts to protect heritage in conflict zones, drawing out guidance for those working in the Heritage Sector in these contexts, with specific relevance to those engaged in cultural heritage protection and those working in related interdisciplinary fields. Reviewing the historic relationship between heritage and armed conflict, and offering lessons for present-day practitioners, Heritage at War shows how, in different contexts, heritage can be a catalyst and target of conflict, an obstacle to stabilisation, and yet also a potential vector of peace-building and the return to normality. It's interesting to compare and contrast State's Register of Culturally Significant Properties and Interior's National Register of Historic Places. All bureaus of federal government have historic sites that we want to recognize and protect, no matter where in the world they are!
May is Preservation Month! OBO’s Office of Cultural Heritage stewards U.S. Department of State - owned historic properties, artworks, and furnishings. OBO Office of Cultural Heritage stewards historic properties overseas through Historic Structures Reports (HSRs), Historic Landscape Reports (HLRs), and Cultural Significance Studies (CSSs). More than 30 unclassified histories are available to the public via the Cultural Heritage website. While there are nearly 300 properties recognized as heritage in the OBO real estate portfolio, 44 are listed on the Secretary of State’s Register of Culturally Significant Property. The Register entries are honorary. The inscribed properties meet criteria for architectural, historical, or diplomatic importance. Together they illustrate the importance of our cultural diplomatic mission abroad.
