Need to catch up on your summer reading? Brookings always has some interesting reads… In the Brookings volume called “USMCA Forward 2024: Gearing Up for a Successful Review in 2026” has a number of noteworthy chapters. I found the final chapter on the USMCA Review and upcoming elections, and a path forward, to be a good read in and of itself. In this chapter, Joshua Meltzer and Steve Verheul suggest what could provide good footing leading to a successful Review. For the US, Canada and Mexico to agree on types of issues to be part of the Review (and propose that the three Parties should careful to not include revising dispute settlement decisions by USMCA panelists. They also suggest that Parties should at the forefront of the Review, to agree to clear the table so to speak on what issues should not be part of a Review. They highlight a preferred outcome that the US, Canada and Mexico agree to an extension of the Agreement and use the Review to begin a process to address new issues with an agreed agenda on a forward-looking workplan. 🚣♂️

Hi all, I'm not sure if you know that there's an attempt by the DNC in creating roadblocks for Democrats to select their presidential candidate in Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Massachusetts. In service of democracy, I want to share and spread the word that you have options in the primaries. Here is a video of the Democratic debate where you hear from different Democratic candidates. I hope this helps you prepare folks for this year's primaries–if you identify as a Democrat. And make sure you register! 😊 #politics #2024elections #democracy #safedemocracy #dnc #presidentialelection #primaries

POLITICAL MODERNISATION DOWNWARDS IN EUROPE? From the ECC, the European economic community to the EU, the European Union Apparently, every single EU parliamentarian, MEP, is made rich by a lavishing remuneration which came into being in January 2024. No wonder that everyone loves Ms Metsola. ▪️MEP gross monthly salary €10,337 – or €8,090 after special EU deductions are taken off. ▪️By comparison: These salaries are much higher than the monthly salary the typical ordinary worker in the EU can expect, which according to Eurostat is €2,944 and in the UK probably around £2600. ▪️Just multiply that amount for the 720 MEPs!! ▪️To run the EU only one representative of each member state should sit in the EU parliament and no political parties at all. Instead Europeans are given the bad copies of their national parliaments with government parties and opposition parties. A recipe for disaster (and war?). ▪️The EU was never supposed to be a political union but only an economic community. What a modernisation downwards has been this change from the EEC to the EU. The monstrous Maastricht Treaty (1992) has ruined everything. ▪️The original idea of an EEC was good bc it established a community led by the only thing that can turn the usual bellicose & belligenrant Europeans into good friends: The economy. And not politics. We see already now after the June 2024 EU elections how the political animals, especially of two countries & their friends, are destroying the good will of the Europeans. Expect the worse? 👇 see https://lnkd.in/dapqvSzT
"Two and a half years later, I still want people to recapture a sense of belief and enthusiasm for our project. A belief to make our shared space safer, fairer, more just and more equal. A belief that together we are stronger and we are better. A belief that ours is a Europe for all." Roberta Metsola expressed what she wants to accomplish as President of the European Parliament, after she was re-elected for a second term of two and a half years. The President represents the Parliament when dealing with other EU institutions and the wider world. The President is elected in a secret ballot by MEPs that takes place in the first plenary session after the elections. The candidate who receives the absolute majority of the votes cast gets the post.

50% of eligible voters don’t vote! At some point truth has to overshadow lies. Better leadership has to triumph poor leadership. Dignity, honor and respect has to takeover the undignified, the dishonorable and those who are disrespectful. But: instead of complaining about your political leaders, how about you vote first? Don’t boo our government . Vote! Want an opinion? You better vote first. https://lnkd.in/eam4yuR3
