India’s healthcare system often prioritises hospital protocols over the needs of mothers, leading to routine over-medicalisation of pregnancy and childbirth. Non-evidence-based interventions like C-sections, inductions, and episiotomies have become common, and while these practices can save lives when used appropriately, their routine misuse has contributed to higher morbidity rates for both mothers and babies, as well as increased healthcare costs. At Aastrika Foundation, we work to restore the focus to mother-centred care and tackle this problem of ‘Too Much Too Soon’ by advocating for the midwifery model of care, strengthening healthcare capacity, and promoting evidence-based practices because we believe every mother deserves compassionate, dignified and respectful care. As a Maternal-Newborn RN and a proud Home Birth Mama x2, I'm thrilled about the Mamas First Act making its way through Congress. This bill could bring Medicaid coverage to doulas and midwives, which is huge for improving birth outcomes —especially for Black mothers facing higher pregnancy-related risks. This move could finally give more mothers the power to choose their care—something that's often out of reach unless you can pay for midwifery care out-of-pocket. I think this is good movement in the right direction. However, I am curious about the assessment of Midwifery & Doula capabilities to handle this potential influxed demand, as well as what this will mean for updated regulations on their practices 🤔 Thoughts? & You can check out this piece from The 19th News with Angela D. 📈 A study by the World Health Organization found that 95% of all maternal deaths in 2020 occurred in low and lower-middle income countries, and most of those deaths were preventable. 🔺 Due to a lack of access to adequate information and healthcare services, the number of maternal deaths in developing nations is significantly higher than in other parts of the world. 🩺 At WAJAMAMA Community Health, capacity building for Nurse-Midwives is one of our fundamental pillars and our vision for scale. We recognize the undeniably important role that skilled healthcare providers play in improving maternal and child health outcomes, which is why we designed a program to equip Nurse-Midwives with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver safe, respectful, and dignified care to all. 🏥 Through our partnerships with Georgetown University, Ariadne Labs, and Laerdal Global Health, we have established Zanzibar’s first high-fidelity medical simulation center where over 1500 healthcare students and faculty have been able to learn and strengthen their skills. 🌼 Head over to www.wajamama.org to learn more about our Nurse-Midwifery Capacity Building initiative! The World Health Organization states 80% of maternal deaths are preventable with expanded access to midwifery care. Our founder, Elaine Welteroth knows firsthand the empowered and safe birth experience that is possible with midwives. After less than ideal birthcare experiences throughout pregnancy, she was in a position, and had the resources, to make the choice to switch to midwifery care. All mothers and families deserve that choice, not just those of us who can afford it. Midwifery care would not only help lower the maternal mortality rate but would also: - Decrease NICU time after birth - Increase odds of vaginal birth - Decrease use of episiotomy - Significantly lower rates of postpartum hemorrhage - Reduced preterm birth cases - AND MORE! So far, #birthFUND has funded midwifery care plus additional resources for 12 families. We are changing lives but there is so much more to be done. It’s on us to save us! Are you ready?
