Professional midwives are skilled healthcare professionals who provide prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care to childbearing women and their infants. Midwives are specialists in normal labour and are well-equipped to provide time, attention, and care through childbirth. They are required to go through formal education and gain experience and exposure by offering services at healthcare facilities. Traditional birth attendants (TBA), on the other hand, are caregivers who work within the community and have gained knowledge through informal systems. They often rely on traditional practices and are not formally trained in the field. While there is overlap in the scope of work that both midwives and TBAs provide, they are differentiated by their respective levels of formal education and expertise and the settings they work in! Most women are afraid of labor and birth - some are very distressed - but there are barriers to accessing mental health programs. Is NOT having a mindfulness program for expectant mothers impacting your bottom line? Is this approach cost-effective? "From a societal and health care perspective, we found MBCP to be a cost-effective intervention to treat FOC in pregnant women. Respectful Maternity Care is one of Aastrika Foundation’s key focus areas. We believe that promoting RMC is key to ensuring a positive birthing experience for women. Educating and creating awareness about what RMC entails has been one of our crucial advocacy initiatives. One of the fun and interactive ways we have done this is through hand or block printing. We invite participants at events to engage with us in a small discussion about RMC, where we share and learn from each other’s experiences. We also urge them to adopt it in their personal and professional settings. We then ask them to use their hands or the blocks with paints to mark their support on one of our walls and write any message they’d like to leave us with. We have conducted this activity across India, at several of the events and conferences we have attended, with the objective of spreading the message and practice of RMC. We hope to continue spreading the message with more vigour and creativity! As we continue to organise and participate in events and workshops, we have pushed for a more creative approach to engagement with our audiences. To reduce a didactic framework and pursue a more interactive one, we introduced and educated people on concepts like Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) and midwifery through games, quizzes, and other interactive activities. As an example, at the 16th National Conference of the Society of Midwives India (SOMI), we utilised the framework of the Snakes & Ladders game to spark conversation on RMC and Evidence-Based Practices (EPBs). Members were invited to play the game while we reworked the rules; if the player‘s pawn landed on the ladder, they’d be shown evidence-based practice in maternal health, while a landing on a snake would mean showcasing a non-evidence-based maternal health practice. We further adapted this game at the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) 33rd triennial congress to educate our audiences on data points, outcome indicators, and government programmes on maternal health in India. This led to a more enjoyable and deeper conversation on the topics. We also encouraged conversations around relevant maternal health topics by conducting maternal health-specific word finders, asking for opinions and support, and conducting surveys on the same subjects. The responses we received throughout were engaging and thought-provoking, and they made for very memorable discussions. These events allowed us the privilege of communicating with passionate and like-minded individuals, healthcare professionals, and community members who shared our vision of ensuring safe and equitable maternal care for all. Beyond that, they tailor care plans based on individual needs, empowering expectant mothers with the knowledge to manage potential complications. Early detection also means timely referrals to specialised healthcare professionals when needed, ensuring those at higher risk receive the right level of care without unnecessary delays. It's all about creating a safe and healthy childbirth experience.
