To support classroom discussions on the global health implications of the 2024 U.S. elections, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health has just launched: 📘 Academic Articles — to provide students with background information on U.S. leadership to advance global health. 💻 PowerPoint Slides — to guide classroom teaching & facilitate student discussions. 🗒️ Fact Sheets — to prepare faculty to discuss key global health issues: global governance, health funding, sexual and reproductive health, corporate regulations, tax equity, humanitarian challenges & climate change. Decolonizing global health training and curricula. We have argued elsewhere that global health mentorship, in its current form, intentionally or not, is predominantly grounded on colonial roots, and called for the decolonization of global health mentorship: https://lnkd.in/eHH3qE_S " A decolonised global health mentorship agenda is highly needed. Operationalising what ethical global health mentorship is, or should be, and how global health mentorship should be decolonised remain areas that deserve keen attention" Carleton-Boylan and colleagues (2024) in their very insightful paper highlight and reiterate the need of being intentional in advancing inclusive and decolonized public health curricula. "The future of successful public health practice requires public health students to be educated within a decolonized curriculum that challenges the historical biases and inequalities that are deeply embedded within global public health and society" A future global/public health workforce, aware and sensitive to the reality of colonialist ramifications within the global health landscape (as core competencies of future global health leaders), and how to navigate these, are non - negotiables. https://lnkd.in/e4DPsNzU

Global Public Health Curricula are Not Fit for Purpose Building on the global consensus on the imperative to adapt curricula to meet the growing challenges of our times and to optimally equip future scholars in the field with the tools they need, we argue that the Global Public Health Curricula are Not Fit for Purpose. Our epistemic reflections anchor on the unacceptability of predominantly outdated frameworks of scholarship that continue to guide the space, epistemic dominance from the global north that still guides what is considered good science and evidence, framing loopholes of what global health in essence is, and the need of global health entrepreneurship to be the lead discipline in the space. Using the COVID-19 pandemic to reimagine global health teaching in high-income countries - Use COVID-19 as a teachable moment, and use it to focus on equity and human rights as a central theme in global health. - Cover the importance of understanding racism and white supremacy in global health, and include content on privilege, anti-oppression, anti-racism and allyship. - Include content on coloniality in global health and the persistent power asymmetries that affect every aspect of global health. - Decolonise pedagogy as a means of contributing to ongoing efforts towards inclusivity in academia. - Centre the courses, where possible, on Black, Indigenous and people of colour speakers, especially experts from the Global South, Indigenous scholars, and individuals working and living within their impacted communities. - Teach students to see and address health inequities wherever they occur, not just in low-income countries. - Diversify the audience and allow more people to access course content remotely, where universities permit this. https://lnkd.in/gv8wpTiA

New Article: Learning Sites for Health Systems Research Learning sites are research platforms in a specific place where researchers and local actors collaborate over extended periods of time, with a commitment to joint ownership and co-production of knowledge. They have been used for developing and testing health care interventions, but less attention has been paid to their potential for health policy and systems research. This Learning Health Systems article draws lessons from five research and community engagement programs which have embedded health policy and systems research in their activities. This includes the work of our partner CEGSS with demonstration sites, municipalities in rural indigenous areas of Guatemala where they work with grassroots organizations to generate learning on effective strategies and capacities to improve democratic governance of the health system. The article discusses the ethical, practical, and other challenges of using learning sites for health systems research.
