The art and food hub that is Maginhawa Street in Quezon City is best experienced on foot—but poor pedestrian infrastructure is limiting visitors and locals alike from fully exploring all that the area has to offer. Last month, visitors came together to help make Maginhawa more vibrant and accessible for all. The citizen-led pedestrianization initiatives encourage walkable, safe, and inclusive public spaces that benefit the whole community. This initiative is part of the Sparking Active Mobility Actions for Climate-Friendly Cities (#SPARK) Project, organized by ICSC and ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat. Discovering Maori Culture Through Poi: A Family Adventure in Hand-Eye Coordination Recently, my family and I embarked on a fascinating journey into New Zealand's rich cultural heritage by learning about and crafting our own Maori poi. This traditional art form, deeply rooted in Maori culture, offers so much more than meets the eye. Poi, consisting of weights on cords swung in rhythmic patterns, originated as a practical tool for Maori women to enhance flexibility for weaving. Over time, it evolved into a significant cultural practice, blending physical skills with storytelling and spiritual expression. Key insights from our poi-making adventure: Cultural Significance: Poi is not just a performance art but a means of preserving history, connecting with ancestors, and strengthening community bonds. Physical Benefits: The practice develops remarkable hand-eye coordination, improves rhythm, and enhances upper body strength and flexibility. Storytelling Medium: We were amazed to learn how poi movements can narrate complex stories, depicting everything from calm seas to fierce battles. Adaptability: While traditionally made from natural materials like New Zealand flax, modern poi incorporate various materials, showcasing the art form's evolution. Global Reach: Poi has transcended its origins, finding enthusiasts worldwide in circus arts and flow arts communities. Our family's poi-making project turned into a valuable lesson about respecting and appreciating diverse cultures. It demonstrated how traditional practices can offer relevant skills and insights in our modern world. Have you ever explored an art form from another culture? How did it broaden your perspective? #MaoriCulture #NewZealand #CulturalExchange #FamilyLearning #Poi #HandEyeCoordination

Happy National Batik Day! Today, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of batik, a symbol of Indonesian identity and craftsmanship. Did you know that Indonesian batik has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity? This global recognition not only honors our tradition but also highlights the values that batik represents: creativity, patience, and attention to detail. Just like the intricate patterns of batik are woven with care and precision, so too are our professional relationships and careers. Every thread in batik represents dedication and artistry—qualities that resonate with us as professionals striving for excellence. As the famous quote says, "Excellence is not an act, but a habit." Batik reminds us that success in our careers, much like the art of batik itself, is built through consistent effort, focus, and perseverance. Whether we’re working on complex legal deals, managing projects, or fostering collaboration across cultures, batik reminds us of the importance of craftsmanship and balance in all that we do. Let’s wear our batik with pride, not just as a fashion statement, but as a reflection of the work we do and the principles we stand for. #NationalBatikDay #Batik #ProfessionalLife #CulturalHeritage #Indonesia #Excellence #UNESCOHeritage
