My (controversial) opinion on overqualification. We, young people, don’t take advantage of all the oportunnities our education offers, and that's one big part of the problem. How many times have we heard that we are the most prepared generation ever. How many times have we seen how difficult is for us to access to the job market. How many times have we wondered if we need further education to get a job. How many times have we blamed the system for not providing us with a job that matches our expectations. I’m not denying there's an imbalance between what the market demands and the degrees our educational system offers, or the low quality of some. That will take another post to talk about… But, as I see it, part of the problem lies within us, the educated young people. We expect that for the mere fact of finishing our degree society owes us a qualified job in the field we have studied. And that’s not how it works. Today, having a degree, or even a master, doesn’t make us special. Now we need to do more than just finishing our degree. We need to take advantage of the oportunnities the university offers, (Erasmus, networking, extracurricular activities…) develop our soft skills, as well as going the extre mile ( Starting our personal projects, seeking more education…) to differentiate us from all the other graduates. As I said, I don’t feel special for having a degree. And I need to feel like that if I want to have the job position I aspire to be in. But a lot of us still think that just by having education we will achieve our dreamed job. There are things we can change and things we can’t. Let’s be proactive, focus on the things we are able to change and let’s take control of our future. What do you think? "The mission statement of the Education Department at Northwest Nazarene University (where I earned my Ed.S in #educationalleadership in 2019) is anchored in a learner-centered core with four pillars. One of these pillars is responsiveness to all, emphasizing a commitment to the academic, social, and emotional growth of every student, with a particular focus on those with diverse needs. Educators prepared at NNU understand the backgrounds of their students, fostering connections through meaningful #relationships and #community building. I had the honor of addressing this pillar during our department's graduation ceremony, where I shared a quote from Mother Teresa: 'I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.' I chose this quote to underscore the importance of collective support for those with diverse needs. Throughout my career, I have strived to surround myself with a strong team characterized by diversity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to doing what is right for others. Over the past year and a half, I had the privilege of working with an exceptional team, each contributing unique strengths to our collaborative efforts. My challenge to each team member now is to be the stone that initiates positive ripples. I am eager to witness the greatness that will emerge from their collective efforts. Maya Angelou once said, 'I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.' To each member of that team, you know who you are - thank you for the way you have made me feel about the team we created together and the shared work and efforts.
