Magic is all around us. It's in the air we breathe and in the strangely clear, colorless, odorless water. In a world where literally everything has a smell and color, water is that one thing that takes on the color of everything it touches, making it pop. The sea reflects the color of the sky above. The sky itself, a sea, is a wonder. I mean, how does this sea hold and only spill when it needs to? The rain, magical. The way it makes everything feel new. It resets things, and you won’t even know it until you think about it. The sky is suddenly clearer, your vision sharper, and all the birds come out to dance and sing this beautiful song after it rains. "Magic" is a word that has been given different meanings across lifetimes, but the word itself is magical when spoken. I am magical; that's what I believe. I'm not done discovering myself, but what I know is magic and magical. Magic for me can also be a miracle, wonder, that which is impossible made possible. The concept of soft power is one that has so often left me admiring the power that a pen and piece of paper possesses. Be it blatant political philosophy, analytical biographical writings, or fictitious commentary on contemporary paradigms, it is indisputable that literature has shaped the world that we have come to know. When I travel I take time to pause and take in the world around me, admire the works of playwrights and poets that lay hidden away in the shops & venues few tourists visit, and most importantly get inspired to think by the relics and buildings of the past so as to shape a better future. For when you pause for a moment and focus on what's in front of you, you will see that the issues of the present - though also finding their roots from the past - are not too different from those our ancestors experienced and overcame. I left art school and joined an indie rock band and during those formative, hell-raising years managed to scribble a few thoughts and feelings down on paper, 'talking' about certain stuff not being a thing back then. I was also rarely sober, battling daily with all kinds of demons even though I was a popular character at the center of a 'scene', but the scribblings, which I pawned off as song lyric inspiration, were more cathartic than I cared to believe at the time... Skip to a bunch of years later, as well as all the stuff I'm now known for, I also organised some of those pages into something for folks to read. So much of what is vital, sustaining and good in our lives (books, music, poetry, art) will have been made/designed/conceived by an artist.Nearly everything that surrounds us materially is, will or has been - designed by an artist…Our homes, clothes, cars, bicycles, books, pictures, music, songs… and ALL the rest…Nearly everything positively, life-changing and catalytic… so much of what is borne of humanist, long-view, legacy thinking… will have been conceived by artists……be they writers, painters, poets, musicians, makers, craftspeople.And the most genius, enduring and resonantly harmonious of these creations, will be those conceived as echoes and mirrors of the geometric patterns and resonances found in the natural world.And if we add to this, the triad of science, sums and the creative sculpting and expression of ideas - then we’re into the realms of real alchemical magic and wizardry! (Besides, I’d argue the trio aren’t separate anyway!)*Conversely and increasingly these days, nearly everything catastrophic, calamitous, short-termist that surrounds us is, has been or will be - designed, orchestrated, engineered and made manifest - by politicians.Don’t get me wrong, there are some BRILLIANT politicians out there - driven by heart and human-centred, selfless, public servitude; compassed by passion, purpose and integrity. But they are drowning in a systemically polluted sea that is increasingly toxic because it’s fed by endlessly meandering muddy waterways of excessive wealth, corruption and vested, self-serving interest.*I have long since felt that our value system is upside down and that until we have a more balanced economic landscape - and until personal and ludicrous levels of wealth-acquisition is divested from politics - the scales will always be skew.*Good art resonates with the individual and resounds with the collective.Bad politics alienates and rebounds the individual - like a pinball - against the collective.I know which gets my vote - every single day of the year. ***This is the first in a new series of #fridayfeels posts ❤️
