Equanimity—calmness and composure, especially in difficult times—is something I learned growing up in the quiet yet resilient parish of St. Thomas. Like many of you, I’ve faced my share of challenges: overcoming shyness, finding my voice, and embracing a purpose rooted in service. But it’s through those very challenges that I discovered the true essence of equanimity. As Jamaicans, we are no strangers to hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. It’s these qualities that shape us, push us forward, and allow us to serve with unwavering dedication, whether at home or abroad. Serving our people, particularly the Windrush generation in the UK, has been one of the greatest honors of my life, reminding me how deeply our roots run and how far our impact can reach. Female elephants, known as cows, have a gestation period of around 22 months, which is the longest of any land mammal. When it's time to give birth, the cow will typically separate from the herd and find a secluded spot to deliver her calf. The birth itself can last several hours, and the newborn calf is usually born weighing around 200 pounds. The mother and other female elephants in the herd will assist in protecting and caring for the newborn calf, teaching it essential survival skills. It's a remarkable display of maternal care and social bonding within elephant herds.Elephants are large mammals known for their long trunks, tusks, and large ears. They are highly intelligent animals with complex social structures and strong family bonds. Elephants are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses, leaves, bark, and fruits. Unfortunately, elephants are facing threats such as habitat loss, poaching for ivory, and human-wildlife conflict. Thanks Kate. Great as ever. We do need a new compact for #protectedlandscapes One which recognises that power over these landscapes needs to sit with a new order. The young. The disenfranchised. The working class. The global majority. The potential of these places for people and nature is significant. And some of this is being realised. But we won’t turn dial on access and nature until new and different people have voice and power. And until we recognise nuance. That food, farming and nature don’t have to compete. That managed tourism is a vital part of landscape economies and access. That people have to live in these spaces so affordable housing and infrastructure are essential. That heritage and nature are intertwined. New Duty a ray of hope (and genius lobby) but it doesn’t just need legal challenge - it also needs a spirit of collaboration where we show the value of these landscapes to public and outline what it looks like to ‘further’. We need new ways of working. New collaborations. Embracing tech and data. New models of governance are emerging. Taking best of 75 years but looking forward. National Trails UK National Parks England National Landscapes Association are all showing some new thinking. Silkin’s vision was egalitarian.
