Attorneys and interpreters are making a difference. ✅ When represented by attorneys with interpreters one-third of immigration court appeals result in reversals. ✅ This significant statistic highlights the powerful impact legal representation with interpreters has on the outcomes of immigration appeals. Attorneys and interpreters not only guide through complexities but dramatically increase the chances of better outcomes. Support the right to representation with an interpreter. Every immigrant deserves a fair chance to be heard. Advocate for legal aid today! Let's Ensure Everyone is Heard. Roberto Fonts #JusticeForImmigrants #LegalAid #DOVI

The Justice Department has halted several federally funded legal aid programs for detained immigrants, cutting off access to legal information and representation. The move follows President Trump’s executive order pausing funding for services aiding undocumented immigrants. The suspension affects programs providing legal help to children in deportation proceedings and detainees in federal immigration centers. Advocates warn this will leave thousands, including minors, without legal guidance. Immigration courts, already overwhelmed, may face more delays as judges struggle to handle cases involving unrepresented children. California plans to allocate $25 million for pro bono legal services, but advocates say access to detention centers remains a major hurdle. Lawsuits challenging the decision are expected soon. My blog post on the ever-increasing deficit in availability of asylum legal aid even where people are clearly eligible and entitled to legal aid representation. Spoiler: the deficit is now an appalling 57% - that's the proportion of people who can't access a legal aid lawyer for an asylum application or appeal. (Also loving the use of the really old photo below!)

The deficit between asylum legal aid provision and need has increased - 57% of main applicants (excl. dependants) claiming asylum or appealing a refusal in the First-tier Tribunal are unable to access a legal aid representative (2023-24). Dr Jo Wilding is a Researcher and Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Sussex, where her research specialism is legal aid and access to legal advice, particularly in immigration and asylum.
