For some time now I've been thinking about the trend of taking on a second job or "overemployment" (yes, it has a name). Inevitable, questions starting popping up in my head: 👉 Is it ethical? 👉 Is there a conflict of interest?  👉 Are we subjecting ourselves to burnout? 👉 What drives one to do this? 👉 Is the task list not challenging enough anymore? Regardless of anyone’s position in this, the important thing is that this is a current phenomenon which attracts many discussions and we are here for it 👀 👀 Keep in mind, this is not a discussion about side gigs, this is not a discussion about control. It is a discussion about ethics, availability, legal matters, burnout, performance. What do you think of the matter? 🤨

Knowledge workers have been shouting it from the mountaintop for years ⛰. ↪ 61% of workers prefer hybrid arrangements My wife (an accountant) has been working from home since we left SF in 2013. And I remember my Aunt telecommuting to an insurance company in Ohio from PDX after her company was acquired in the early 2000s (I was her local IT guy 👨💻😁). But then the Great Resignation, and Quiet Quitting? ↪ Only 33% of remote workers strongly agree they have a healthy work-life balance As the article states, "Although many of these dynamics have been in the headlines since 2020, they are not actually new"... ⭐ According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, resignations have been steadily increasing for more than a decade. While the now ubiquitous debate on Remote/Hybrid Vs post-Pandemic RTO continues to roil both sides, the authors decided to look at survey data to dig deeper... ⭐ A study of 1,516 U.S. workers shows that flexibility—not necessarily remote work—improves well-being. Their key takeaways: 🔑 People who had greater control over their time had the highest job satisfaction and overall satisfaction with their lives 🔑 Those who felt a sense of time scarcity had less satisfaction with their jobs and were less satisfied with their lives 🔑 The number of hours people worked was not related to how satisfied people were with their jobs 🔑 For those who had more control over their time, feeling time scarcity did not undermine their job satisfaction as much as it did for those who had less control over their time. ⭐ Employers should therefore create and tailor flexible work policies to meet diverse employee needs, fostering satisfaction and retention. Recent data found that in 2023, fully remote employees were 35 percent more likely to be laid off than their peers who worked full-time in the office or had a hybrid schedule.
