As an analyst if you're not prepared to argue your case, you're not going to be a good analyst. You're job is to be a beacon of light not to kiss your stakeholders arse.

Throughout this year Talenting is focussing on highlighting and eliminating bias in hiring. Bias Buster Bob will be here every Wednesday and Saturday giving examples of type of bias. Bias exists, we cannot ignore it. But we can highlight it and seek to eliminate it. What other forms of bias have you seen? #HiringBias #Staffing #Data #DataEngineering #BiasBuster

Insightful Data Analyst | Superpower: Grasping Any Technical Data | 6 Years Electrical Engineering Background | I create the map for others to see
How do you deal with or work with people who might come up short, never seem to have done enough research or learned the basics, or just never listen? First - breathe. You encounter this no matter which profession, job role, background, experience level or orientation you come from. Now that you are centered, we're going to remember that there is a human on the other side of this interaction. They probably feel embarrassed, worried or scared. Unless they are actively trying to attack you (which can happen) they don't want to be yelled at anymore than you want to be yelling. ***Your goal now is to have the most neutral conversation possible following this structure: - Declarative statement - Your intentions and why - Pause for response and follow up question. "I was surprised when I checked on the project and it wasn't completed. The customer needs our output before we can bill them and pay our team. Have I missed an updated location or is this indeed the status?" If they get defensive follow the same prompt but make it about them. Remember your goal isn't to be right, wrong, positive, negative or blame them - its to be AS NEUTRAL AS POSSIBLE and state the facts. Remember that the unfortunate reality of this world is that blame is the first response so they will likely be spiky: "I'm asking you because you are the most senior technical person on this team and know the latest updates and progress reports. I need to know what the most current information is so I know how to conduct the status meeting later today and if we need to file an extension." So many things in life are the complete opposite of what we expect or think is logical. Resources and expectations are negotiable and most of the time you are in a safe and secure position even if all the project things or circumstances are 'crumbling' around you. You take a breath. Start from safety. Declare your intentions and say WHY its important and keep your opinion of them (or theirs of you) out of the conversation. Focus on only the relevant pieces of what is happening in the moment - not what it projects or not what has been done. Be courageous: take a step back from DOING to DEFINING and watch your team take off. #data #datajourney #dataprofessionals #professionalism #careergrowth #careerdevelopment #dataanalyst

Recently, my girlfriend and I had a long talk about not going out as much as we did when we first started dating. She expressed frustration, saying we don’t spend enough time together outside, but I couldn’t help feeling a bit confused. From my perspective, I had been the one making the effort, inviting her to go out on dates and outings. Yet, she always seemed to say “No” on many occassion This wasn’t the first time we’ve had this argument, and frankly, I had lost count of how often it had come up. So, in true business analyst fashion, I decided to approach the issue with data. I have started keeping a journal, documenting every time I invite her out and the reasons she’s giving for declining. My goal is to understand the pattern and the excuses behind her “No” responses, just like I would analyze stakeholder behavior at work. As I track responses, it’s not just about gathering data—it’s about uncovering insights into our communication and expectations. This journal might just help me understand our dynamic better, giving me a clearer view of the real issue behind our “outing” problem. Maybe it’s not just about going out more, but rather about understanding how we connect and communicate. #businessanaylsis #stakeholderengagement #requirementgathering #processimprovement #stakeholdercommunication

Today is my last day at McGraw Hill. After almost four years on Team Sharpen, it's time to try something new and closer to home (which I'll post about next week!). I've loved working with this dedicated team, and making data work for us. We've built a unique insights practice that's helped us meet our product goals by really listening to our student users. It's impossible to summarize all we've done, so I thought I'd just share the values that have made Sharpen Insights what it is: 🚀 Mission-driven, data-informed 🚀 We have a mission to support learners, and while data helps us see the truth about their experience, it can't drive. ❓ Start with the business question ❓ Strategic questions aren't data questions. Translating from one to the other takes thoughtful conversations, which have always been collaborative, and sometimes even fun 😅, with this team. 📈 Everyone is a data stakeholder 📈 Not everyone needs to write SQL, but everyone asks questions of the data, almost everyone creates it, and everyone should have an idea of what it can (and can't!) tell us. Every time a team shares an understanding of a metric, an angel gets its wings. I'm grateful to all the people at McGraw Hill who gave me the chance to put these ideas into practice, while also growing my skills and contributing to a truly meaningful project. I know great work will continue, because of this team's strong values, data-based and otherwise. 💘 Stay sharp!
