Linked below an excellent piece from the Financial Times on UK Capital Markets, and the role the UK Pensions Sector has to play in it.   By some calculations, there is now enough surplus money in UK Private Sector Defined Benefit Pension Plans to buy every single company in the FTSE250, lose it all, and still have enough money left over to pay every single pension promised in full.   Now, I am not saying UK DB Pension Plans should pile all (or even any) of their surplus assets into UK equities, but with such huge surpluses around, it does make you think what could be achieved for members, employers and the UK economy if we had a UK pensions system that enabled surplus assets to be more safely and sensibly invested in value generative assets, a safe surplus sharing mechanism, and perhaps had liability discount rates that were not so obsessed with gilts?
