Dear Manager and Senior Manager Tax Professionals: For mid-career tax professionals, the transition from the Big 4 to an in-house corporate tax department can mark a significant turning point. By this stage, professionals working for large firms have developed a strong technical foundation and are likely seeking new challenges and opportunities for growth, making the transition to an in-house role particularly appealing. At this point, it’s also critical that tax professionals evaluate their long-term objectives and determine their preferred career trajectory. Here are the Pros for considering in-house roles: 1. Gain deeper insights into the implementation and execution of tax strategies instead of merely advising clients. 2. Take on a more integrated role with the company. 3. Seize the opportunity to see how tax closely interacts with various corporate functions, including treasury, financial planning and analysis, legal, and the controller’s office--aside note, it's low risk, as you can always go back to professional services and be seen and recognized as a valuable asset. 4. Compensation packages typically come with a combination of a competitive salary, consistent bonus, and equity in annual stock grants. 5. An improved work-life balance--say good bye to the client deadlines and billable hours--enjoy your time at work and with your family. Interested in the cons? Don’t let job descriptions scare you off—here’s what really matters. When I speak with hiring managers, they, like most companies, post a job description and hope the right people apply. The problem? Many job descriptions are filled with long lists of desirable or non-essential requirements that often put great candidates off from applying. Here’s what I focus on when scanning these descriptions for the candidates I work with: Years of Experience: Does the candidate have the required experience or come close enough to learn quickly? Relevant Tax Experience: Have they worked in tax compliance or advisory in a similar field or with similar types of clients? Tax Qualifications: Do they have the necessary tax qualifications for the role (CPA, EA, ATT, CTA, etc.)? If you meet these key points, chances are you’re a strong candidate! Many of the other responsibilities and requirements are often negotiable or teachable. So don’t let a long list of “desirables” stop you from applying.
