Summit Next Gen secures site for ethanol-to-jet facility Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) developer Summit Next Gen announced successful acquisition of a 60-acre site in Houston on the Houston Ship Channel to serve as the foundation for the company's ambitious project to build the world's largest ethanol-to-jet SAF production facility. “The completion of this project and commencement of operations will facilitate the creation of the first at-scale ETJ SAF production facility providing critical new markets for our agricultural and ethanol feedstock partners and helping to bridge the supply shortage of SAF globally, as demand for continued decarbonization efforts for the aviation industry exponentially increase,” said Bruce Rastetter, founder and executive chairman, Summit Agricultural Group. To accelerate the green transition, we need to utilize biomass like residuals (i.e., unused straw leftovers) from the farming industry today to decarbonize the hard-to-electrify sectors. Mikkel Sjølin Kiil, CEO, elaborates: “It is important that both decision-makers and agriculture understand the issue we are facing: We need to replace fossil fuels with green alternatives. Here, solar, wind, and biomass all play an important role. The question is not whether we should do it or which technology will 'win.' Everything must be used as quickly as possible! Avalon Energy has announced the launch of a $380M Agriculture-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) biorefinery in Uruguay, supported by the Ministry of Environment and the Government of Uruguay. This project is designed to reduce aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuel-based jet fuels. It integrates a sustainable agricultural strategy, using non-edible oil seed crops alongside green hydrogen production from solar-powered electrolysis, creating a low-carbon SAF supply chain. The project, designated as a high-impact clean energy initiative, will feature a 100,000 MT per year SAF production facility utilizing the Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) process. Additionally, a 50 MW solar power plant will produce green hydrogen, a critical component for SAF production. By #2027, this innovative facility will #transform household #wastewater sludge into valuable #energy, directly supporting Aquafin’s climate targets and paving the way for a circular economy. 🌍 Strategically located on the site of ArcelorMittal Belgium in Ghent, FOSTER will maximise resource recovery. The steam generated through advanced thermal processing will be delivered directly to ArcelorMittal, ensuring energy is utilised with optimal efficiency. Today REDA co-hosted a workshop at Te Rae with the EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) to present initial findings from their Regional Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) review. The review looks at opportunities and barriers faced by industry when seeking to reduce emissions from process heat – the energy used for heat generation in manufacturing and processing primary products. We had a great turnout, including energy users, forestry companies, lines and power companies, councils, and others. While Hawke’s Bay only produces 2% of NZ’s industrial process emissions, we still have a significant opportunity to reduce our region’s emissions through shifting to more environmentally friendly energy sources such as biofuels. The RETA review will be finalised shortly and covers energy demand in HB, the potential for demand reduction, and the availability of alternative fuels. The good news is HB should have a surplus of biofuel available to power a greener future but we’re going to need to work together to make it happen – not only for the environment but also because it stacks up financially for business.
