We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Derek Muhs - Co-founder of HCMC and a great orator during the orientation programme at Xavier Institute Of Management and Entrepreneurship
Many talk about their successes but few talk about their failures, mental breakdowns, challenges and tough times.
A big thank you to Mr. Derek Muhs for the reality check behind the most romanticised concept - Entrepreneurship.
Here are a few key points from the session and the interpretations that I derived from it.
"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward "
1. Resilience: Everything comes with challenges and tough times but picking ourselves up and navigating a way through it is what makes us achieve great things in life. We are just one YES away!
2. Reassurance: Appreciating and reassuring someone for their work might seem like a small thing but has a great impact in acknowledging, boosting and uplifting others. One kind word can make someone's day!
"Fail, Fail again, Fail better"
3. Fear and doubt: No matter how prepared we are or how strategically we plan and play the game, a simple discouragement or a short-term failure shatters our self-confidence leading to self-doubt and fear of uncertainty but we must take that risk, that journey, sail through the tides and never give up on our ideas because there's always light at the end of the tunnel.
4. Mental Hygiene : A little brain scrub now and then helps keep us sane and mentally healthy which is equally important as personal hygiene and fitness.
A fit mind helps in making efficient decisions and manage our lives well.
5. Corporate Culture: A toxic culture only dims the light and suppresses ideas to flourish. A 'Yes Sir' culture is deficient in creativity. A culture where people can take centre stage and share their opinions and ideas or even challenge the existing ones surely goes a long way and helps the organisation achieve great heights.

We're confronting the "Sheeples" pandemic, as described by Jonathan Clark of The Eighth Mile Consulting—a widespread issue impacting business, education, and society.
Societies that reward compliance and punish assertiveness inadvertently promote a lack of courage and initiative. This cycle of reinforcing silence and discouraging strength, rooted in principles like B. F. Skinner Foundation's Operant Conditioning, limits personal growth and creates widespread apathy.
To forge a resilient society that actively stands against injustices, we must encourage assertiveness and resist passivity. Without this shift, communities remain vulnerable to adversity, and negative forces continue to flourish.
In this context, we might be missing a crucial element: the "Donkey." This figure symbolizes a shift in perspective, challenging us to recognize and value unique potentials (innate talent) and question the status quo. However, embracing Donkey's insight requires us to first learn to listen, even when faced with ridicule or dismissal. Donkey teaches us to look beyond our initial judgments and see the deeper truths about our biases.
Making "Donkey" visible seems like a daunting task for many, as it often triggers our ingrained "Sheeples" tendencies. Consider this: if you were asked to DEFINE WHAT TALENT IS or describe "Donkey" (talent) in detail, could you overcome your own prejudices and judgments? Imagine being asked to disregard your education, skills, or position, and even forget about personal performance or behavioural traits and culture. Could you describe what "Donkey" looks like and how it might change shape, size, color, and even sound different in various people?
As we search for answers, we must be open to unexpected forms of help. Humanixs, much like the Donkey, represents this unconventional ally. It prompts important questions: Can we afford to overlook what Humanixs offers, especially when traditional methods fall short? How do we measure and appreciate assertiveness amidst complexity, or understand the journey from individuality to conformity?
Humanixs provides a unique, #unbiased, and #nonjudgmental platform to explore and understand these narratives, helping us to discover the roots of our challenges and the paths to #resilience. The solution may not appear as we anticipate, but through tools like Humanixs, we can begin to unravel how and why we transform into Sheeples, and what it takes to reverse that #transformation.

If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, the concepts Junior Schoeman just shared in the below post had remained at instructive level only.
But nowadays there are just too many real cases of mistreatment at workplace and employees who are too scared to stand up because they’ve wistnessed what happens when someone dares to speak up. The lack of justice and faireness leads to higher and higher levels of toxicity, burnout and more severe side effects.
Donkeys are less and less fearless and assertive, despite their innate talent and strenghts as ilustrated in the video he shared.
Sheeps will keep doing what they do best, follow the rules without questioning them.
Wolves and hienas are more confident than ever as their source of food keeps increasing.
How do we break this circle of distrust?
What are the ways to show the companies that there are different methods of leading a succesful business by respecting human values at the same time?

Feeling good physically translates to better mental clarity and emotional resilience, making it easier to tackle problems.
2. 💼 **Get a second source of income**
A side hustle provides financial security and reduces dependence on a single income stream. Having the extra cash flow allows you more breathing room when making decisions.

Nourishing your body with healthy food is the best thing you can do to fuel optimal performance. This will help you improve your mood, focus, and overall well-being.
4. 👬 **Find 3 real friends**
Having people who care about you, celebrate your victories, and give you honest feedback makes a significant difference in how you tackle challenges.
5. 💰 **Live below your means**
Avoid debt and unnecessary spending. Having some financial breathing room empowers you to make choices based on what's truly important.
6. 📚 **Keep learning**
Continuous learning keeps your mind sharp and adaptable. This can open up new opportunities and help you solve problems more effectively.
7. 🧘♂️ **Practice mindfulness**
Taking time to meditate or engage in mindful activities can reduce stress and improve your emotional well-being, allowing you to approach problems with a clear mind.
8. 📅 **Plan and prioritize**
Organizing your tasks and setting priorities ensures that you focus on what truly matters, reducing the overwhelm of tackling too many things at once.
9. 🛌 **Get enough sleep**
Proper rest is essential for cognitive function and overall health. A well-rested mind is better equipped to handle daily challenges.

We all know that our profession, while incredibly rewarding, isn't without its challenges.
Today, we want to talk into the art of resilience – that secret sauce that helps us bounce back from setbacks and grow stronger in the process.
Resilience isn't an innate trait that you're either born with or not. It's a skill, and like any other, it can be honed and developed.
So, how exactly do we do that?
1. Embrace the bad: It's not always in the world of occupational therapy, and that's okay. When setbacks or disappointments hit, don't shy away from them. Acknowledge the frustration – but don't let them consume you. Remember, setbacks are just opportunities for comebacks.
2. Cultivate a growth mindset: To thrive in this field, you've got to be open to learning and growing. When faced with a challenges ask, "What can I learn from this?" By constantly seeking growth, you'll build the mental fortitude to conquer anything that comes your way.
3. Develop a support network: Even the most resilient folks need a helping hand from time to time. Surround yourself with like-minded professionals who understand the unique challenges of our field. Share your struggles, your triumphs, and your knowledge – because we're all in this together.
4. Keep your eyes on the prize: Setbacks can knock you off course, but they don't have to keep you there. Stay focused on your goals and remember why you chose this profession in the first place. That passion and determination will fuel your resilience in the face of adversity.
5. Practice self-compassion: Cut yourself some slack. We're all human, and we all stumble. Give yourself permission to be imperfect and extend the same understanding to others. By practicing self-compassion, you'll find it easier to bounce back when setbacks come knocking.
Setbacks are inevitable, but it's how we bounce back and grow that truly defines us.

Tech Leadership Coach | Helping disillusioned Snr/Exec tech leaders reignite their career with unstoppable confidence, effortless presence and a ton more resilience and joy.
Just six months ago, John (name changed for anonymity) was grappling with severe stress from the erratic and unpredictable demands of his CEO.
He felt drained, frustrated, and perpetually on edge.
In fact, things got so bad, he began doubting his capabilities as a leader.
Friends would say - "Mate, you're always tense. It's like you're constantly waiting for another bomb to drop."
His wife told John - "You're not the same person I married. You're always stressed and it's affecting our relationship and the kids."
John was at breaking point.
But he reached out to me.
I sat down with John and listened to his struggles.
John told me everything he had tried:
He tried meditation and mindfulness apps but found they only offered temporary relief and didn't address the root cause of his stress.
He’d tried pushing on through with a positive mindset but it left him feeling drained.
He admitted that he enjoyed a few glasses of wine in the evening but he worried about ‘self-medicating’ his stress.
He’d begun to wonder if he had some fatal flaw.
John even considered switching to a less demanding role.
But he knew this would only provide temporary relief because it wouldn’t challenge him intellectually, leading to dissatisfaction and underutilisation of his skills.
I told John -
"Look, I know this feels bad. Because you’ve genuinely been working hard to regain your peace of mind and nothing’s worked.
But there’s a reason for that.
That reason is these solutions are like putting a bandage on a deep wound—they don't heal the underlying issue."
A lightbulb went off.
All of a sudden, he saw why all his efforts to find balance and professional satisfaction had failed.
And he was eager to try something different.
So I told John about the "Tech Leadership Accelerator."
This is the system I’ve been using with high-achieving clients since 2014.
It’s not a surface level solution. It’s a complete shift.
Fast forward 6 months though, and John had:
- Successfully secured a new role way better aligned to his values, breezing through probation
- Rediscovered his passion for tech innovation, boosting both his job satisfaction and performance
- Improved his home life, ensuring quality time with his family while excelling at work
John could hardly believe the change. He used to dread Mondays and feel overwhelmed by Sunday night. Now, he feels like he’s steering his life and career, not just enduring them.
I just have 2 words to say to John:
HUGE congratulations.
Achieving harmony in your professional and personal life is never easy.
Especially when you’ve been trying for years with no luck.
So the fact he turned it around with the help of the Tech Leadership Accelerator is incredible.
If you’re also feeling overpowered and drained by your work environment, whether like John you’ve also been at this for years, or you’re only just starting your journey…

"Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out." -
Knowing what is right or do right, is often like deep waters.
We often need the expertise of divers to get to depths in the sea, to extract lost treasures.
We, just like treasures, are unravelled through a multitude of counsel.
The power to seek guidance highlights the peak of one's self-awareness.
The best version of ourselves often emerges through the counsel of others,- that leading by the hand!🤝
Show road, who know road. 🤠
Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance.

Yesterday, I had an cringy, unprofessional moment, which led to me realising something monumental.
I have incredibly high expectations for the work we do for our customers, for which I make no apologies.
Everything we present must ‘feel’ right, finished, top quality. The WLB standard.
This often requires early mornings hustles and sometimes even sky-high printing costs at Warehouse Stationery’s across the country because of last-minute inspiration that needs capturing.
These standards are why I've continued to be involved in certain tasks for projects that I probably could have stepped away from.
Yesterday, I found myself unprepared for a task. I didn’t nail it. While I achieved what was needed, it wasn’t done with the usual finesse.
Rather than feeling bad about this, I reflected on it while journalling and realised something significant:
I've finally taken my foot off the pedal in some areas, because my team are truly ON IT.
They understand, respect and deliver the quality I expect.
They’ve proven this time and again.
Now I can step in about 70% of the way through each project, without any drop in quality.
Can you imagine how wonderful this feels?
The transition from a 1-2 person team to a well-functioning 5-person team is actually a HUGE deal.
Many (most?) sole operators try and fail because it’s haaaard.
When you've built something from the ground up, using skills that come easy to you but require significant learning and support for others, it’s bone tiring.
The extra financial benefits are earned through blood, sweat and coffee.
Because during this time, you're still doing most of the work, while also training the team.
There have been many moments when I've felt utterly tapped out.
I've often had nothing left in the tank and have let certain things slip - most notably, my physical fitness.
While this isn't ideal, when you're feeling tapped out, something has to give.
I chose to prioritise my relationships, work and my general high spirits.
Cos, sometimes we just can't nail everything all the time.
To founders who have grown their businesses, take a moment to remember and acknowledge the effort, dedication and sacrifice it took to achieve that growth.
If you succeeded, it wasn’t through luck.
To staff working with founders, take a moment to reflect on the risk, sacrifice and energy it takes for founders to elevate their business to the next level.
And to my team - O H M Y G O S H - thank you.
Thank you for listening, understanding, stepping up, diving deep and being so clever, reliable, fun and dedicated to WLB.
How lucky we are, aye.
Ps – To confirm this new phase, I've been suddenly finding the time for impromptu body movement - cold swims, low tide exploration, traversing a hill to run the drone….cos the only way I ever get fit is by doing frivolous things that happen to involve moving my body!
We can look at deprivation a few ways and this way may work best.
The struggle for the small reward sooner and the large reward later give our decisions interesting dynamics.
Share with a person in need of some perspective on what they say yes to.
