Why am I against all that festive, branded traditional attire made specifically for our African #IWD celebrations ? Let’s talk about the economics behind it! A sister was responding earlier to a post of mine via X, where I invited people to respond if they are for or against the #March8 branded traditional attire. As she explained her opinion- for women doing whatever they choose to do on that day-, she said : « I personally believe, a woman is free to celebrate #IWD however she pleases as long as she understands the reason behind the existence of the event. Women have been told too many times in the past what or what not to do. In modern days, all special events call for commercial opportunities. Christmas, Easter, VD have all been commercialized. If she wants to look good on IWD, and has the means to do so, it is her choice. » So, this was MY response; « Women have also been exploited over and over in these extremely capitalistic systems of ours. Women make up more of the consumer base, and not the owner/producer -of the goods they mostly consume or use …(haircaire, bodycare, traditional attires) which is valued as a multibillion dollars market across our continent, while she remains underpaid, with unequal standing at lowest of lows among the classes. March 8th is highly symbolic as it is also about reclaiming our rights. Not like any other holiday. Those dynamics can and must change. If our public policies were to address commerce and trades starting with the March8 symbolism—by imposing for example some regulations (quotas within procurement processes, or incentives such as taxation relief for women owned SMEs )—-… we could really say that her choices will become whole! As she will be both owner/producer and consumer ! » Any thoughts ?
