🕊️ Every year on 2 October, to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, we observe International Day of Non-Violence. While the principles and philosophy of non-violence remain as relevant today as they were in Gandhi's time, violence itself has taken on new forms. Today, we want to throw a spotlight on cyber bullying and online aggression. Cyber bullying has a devastating effect on children and young people. It can lead to social isolation, poor self-esteem, learning difficulties, and other forms of emotional and physical harm. 💜 45% of Australian children aged 8-17 say they were treated hurtfully online in the past year, and 26% admit that they treated someone else hurtfully.* 💜 37% of Australian teens aged 14-17 saw gory or violent images or videos online in the past year.* 💜 59% of parents of teens are concerned about their child's use of social media, with worries including cyber bullying and online predators.** Keeping children safe online is everyone's responsibility. Parents, carers, educators, government and tech companies all have important roles to play. Visit DigiTalk, our online safety hub, to learn more. https://ow.ly/HeLE50TAN0T

The African Internet Rights Alliance (AIRA), recently hosted a special edition of #AIRALightningTalks. This series, recognizing the African Union's dedication of 2024 as the Year of Education, explored the critical intersection of #DigitalRights and #Education in Africa. Representing PIN, my talk, "Protecting Children Learners from Cyber Bullying and Harmful Content in the Use of the Internet for Learning," was one of many insightful presentations by AIRA members. Key takeaway: As we embrace digital learning tools, educators, caregivers, and parents must be vigilant about the '4Cs' of online risks for children: 1. Contact 2. Content 3. Conduct 4. Contract While our lightning talks couldn't cover all aspects of these crucial topics, they sparked important conversations on digital safety in education across Africa. I'm eager to learn more about what strategies you found effective in promoting safe internet use for learning in your communities. #AIRALightningTalks #DigitalRights #Education #AfricanUnion #YearOfEducation #DigitalSafety #OnlineLearning #CyberBullying #ChildProtection #EdTech

Attention to detail.
Top story on CNN right now. “The district home of Oxford High School in Michigan – where a teenager in 2021 killed four students and wounded six others and a teacher – got 35,000 threats in a month after the massacre. It typically gets 500 in a year, according to an academic study that claims it’s one of the first to quantify more than 1,000 threats of school violence over four academic years. No agency or group tracks all threats of US school violence, from possible gun attacks to bombings to any other conceivable danger. “Schools likely quietly handle thousands of threats of shootings that do not make the news,” the study’s authors wrote this year in the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Threat Assessment and Management.” The authors of this study were Jillian Peterson, Dr. James Densley, and I.

Is Your Child Truly Secure? According to the National Home Education Research Institute homeschooling is rising at between 2 and 8% per annum and a 2009 study tells us one of the reasons. It estimated that at least 20.8% of youth in the US were physically bullied, 53.6% were verbally bullied, 51.4% were socially bullied, and 13.6% were cyber bullied at least once over a two-month period. I hope we have zero tolerance for bullying. Homeschooling doesn't put an end to bullying, but it reduces it drastically. Homeschooling ensures to a large extent, the physical, emotional and academic security of your child. And it puts your child's education right in your hands. Homeschooling brings up the question of who between the parents will sacrifice their career. But you can get a tutor. At Edupaedia Nigeria Limited, we not only place checked and screened teachers in your home, we join hands with you to make it happen, make it work and keep your child secure.
