Merchant Navy and a vicious cycle for Indian seafarers !! (The video below is made thinking about Indian seafarers but the basics would remain same for every Country) Seafarers : There are no jobs, frauds are there, agents are earning money and we are suffering. Shipping Colleges : We want to produce the best sailors but the students who come to us, they are not committed, they want money but not ready to work hard to build a career in this profession. Shipping Companies: Indian seafarers lack commitment. They want short contracts and the difference they bring in quality as compared to other nationalities is not so much that we can forget the extra cost that we would incur in terms of salary or crew change. As an Indian seafarer, I would never want a bigger contract. I would want a higher salary with shorter contracts but why would a Ship owner be ready to pay me more. I mean he is a businessman and business runs on profit. Profit for a ship owner: Good quality seafarer, who saves him money in maintenance, proactive actions in saving break down maintenance, zero injury, great inspection reports. I mean he saves money in machinery and earns respect with reports, which will help him earn more on freight. Now when you earn more, you will be ready to pay more to the person who is bringing profits to you. So, in a nutshell, we need to become IRREPLACEABLE seafarers for Ship Owners. How will we become Irreplaceable ? We need to build quality seafarers who are committed towards the profession and it is the responsibility of Maritime Colleges majorly to prepare quality committed seafarers. How will a Maritime College build quality seafarers ? When you have a choice to select a car from 100 cars, you have more options and definitely chances of selecting a great piece increases but if you have to make a choice from just 2, then you get the best amongst the rest. Same is the case with Merchant Navy today in India. Today, from a population of 1.4 billion, only 30,000 students aim to join Merchant Navy. Maritime colleges do not have much choice to make. They have to fill seats, once again for profit or survival that is a different game but they have to fill seats. So, the quality that you get is from those 30,000 aspirants only (choosing from best among the rest). How to solve this problem? Creating awareness in Tier 3 and 4 cities about Merchant Navy, where hungry and hardworking students are waiting but they do not have access to the right information. Awareness about good and the ugly in Merchant Navy and then let them decide. When 1 lakh students apply for the exams and not 30000, automatically we will have ample choices to select the actually committed person. Once again, I am not asking to increase the number of seats but just want to select best amongst the best. "I've NEVER had someone work for me who didn't pass." That was just the kick in the ass I needed. When I joined the Navy in the early 90's... Women weren't allowed to serve on combat ships. So I was sent to Adak, Alaska, to work in Logistics. I had to pass an exam to advance. But... that exam was based on knowledge I should've gained on a ship.. had I been allowed on one. I was resentful & I didn't care. I just wanted to qualify for the GI Bill and get out, honestly. I drank too much. I showed up with my uniform wrinkled every day. I let people's negative comments get to me. I failed the test the first time - I hadn't even studied. But all of that changed when my Chief said those words. It unlocked something in me: real motivation. Even if purely for my ego's sake, it changed me. I started using that resentment, those negative comments, everyone's belief that I would fail - as fuel. I started studying & taking things seriously. I passed the test on my next try. Shortly after that, I qualified for the GI Bill.. but as you know, I didn't stop there. I served more than 20 years. I not only value that Chief's words to me.. But if you work with me as a client, I use that same style of motivation. Sometimes people need a gentle nudge.. and sometimes they need a little tough love. Because my coaching style is tailored to you, I give you the exact kind of motivation you need.
