A recent post on Sidney Poitier's documentary showing how remarkable he was is illustrative of the impact of storytelling. There's an old joke amongst filmmakers. Sometimes the draw of a film writes itself, because the material is so compelling. That is Sidney Poitier. Our filmic touch points for the amazing human beings; Black, oppressed whom overcome so many odds, are few and far between. The studio's many reasons for not commissioning, includes they don't sell. Denzel Washington described how an exec told him, that as a leading actor, sales dropped dramatically in the Asian market. That positioning comes down to the studios own lack of imagination and other dominating traits. You want to influence people, show and tell them stories. In Bob Marley's biopic https://lnkd.in/eJ7C6p2a 'ReMastered: Who Shot the Sheriff?' an aide explains to a concerned Marley, desiring a gun to protect himself, before he takes to the stage. He'd previously survived an assassination. His aide reassures him; you're guitar is your weapon. Not counting the many public heroes and heroines, there are the stories we read in books of ordinary characters made extraordinary. Their extraordinariness stems from the writer or author seeing something the real life characters rarely recognised in themselves. Their stories are their weapon.
