EVENT MANAGEMENT - my unseen passion I got asked at a age of about 12 what I want to become. My answer was simple: something with animals, because I love dogs and horses. 🐶🐴 When I got asked at a age of 16, I said: I love organising, planning and taking responsibilities. At this time I was part of the school council and I spent as much time as possible on this. 🚀 After graduation I was pretty sure in which direction I want to go. And this was something really uncommon! All my friends and many classmates couldn‘t decide what they want to study or which way to go. I did a 6 month internship to be really (!) sure - and decided on a dual study so I was able to gain practical experience already throughout my education. Since then I started loving my job which also became my passion from day one onwards. Of course and everbody is aware of that - there are always ups and downs, days when it is hard to get up and challenges you think you will fail on. But looking back and reflecting on my way of already 8 years in the eventmanagement sector I am kind of proud. 💯 I am excited where the next years will lead me! Yesterday at the Minor Interns Virtual Networking Event I had the opportunity to facilitate a career workshop titled “Personal Branding: The MINOR Way” which is designed to increase communication, confidence and collaboration amongst teams. The framework is simple: M Meaning I Interest N Numbers O Opportunity R Reflect By using this framework you can elevate your personal brand and amplify the way you connect on a daily basis by sharing a small part of your dreams through each conversation you have. In the larger group and in small breakout rooms we practiced how we can use the framework to respond to to the normal question we hear everyday, “How are you?” For context: 🟦M: Meaning - What is your why? 🟨I: Interest - Be interested, not interesting 🟦N: Numbers - How do you measure success? 🟨O: Opportunity - When can we collaborate next? 🟦R: Reflect - What could I do better next time? Here is a simple example: Instead of saying “I’m fine, and you?” you could instead share a little bit about your why. It could look like this: - Hi, good morning, how are you? - I’m doing great, one of my internship goals is to strengthen my communication skills and yesterday I met with three new people and connected with them on LinkedIn. How are you? In this example, the Meaning or why is to communicate. The way this person measures success or Numbers is through connections made on LinkedIn. By sharing this in casual conversation we are opening the door for more Opportunities and chances to collaborate if the person we are speaking to has a similar goal. Then, at the end it’s always important to Reflect on what we could do better next time we have the chance to meet that person again. And always, seek to make authentic connections by focusing on active listening and being Interested in what the other person is sharing. Organizing a successful event isn't always easy... Trust me, I speak from experience! However, just cause it can be challenging doesn't mean it's impossible. In fact, I think these tips can be really helpful if you want to get into event organizing. Out of the steps covered in this blog post, I think the MOST important thing you can do is get hands-on experience. Learning about event planning is helpful, but actually taking the next step and getting that real-world experience will do wonders for your confidence! If you don't know where to start, consider volunteering or doing an internship. My career journey has been a wild roller coaster, filled with highs and lows. While I dipped my toes into film production and event management during internships and co-ops, my story truly begins with a remote role at a personality development startup. I started as a social media coordinator, hired with no prior experience, but with eagerness to learn (the quality I believe an early career role requires). Of course, I had to learn a lot from YouTube videos and various articles. The turning point came when my boss’s family visit turned into a work trip. Together, we orchestrated our inaugural event, “Discover Your Brilliance,” aiming to unlock people's potential. With just two of us in the company (my boss and me), I took the reins, drawing on past event management experiences. From selecting the venue to meticulously managing marketing strategies and intricately handling every minute detail of the program. Despite limited resources and time, we faced the ‘good problem’ of overflowing attendance (that's what my boss used to call it), proving our event a hit. The success sparked my ambition, realizing the immense potential with more hands on deck. What started as a job soon led to an offer to become a business partner and head the company’s operations and marketing as the Country Head. This journey wasn’t just a job - it was a path to unexpected opportunities and personal growth. So, why share this journey? As a graduate student seeking project management opportunities, this serves as a powerful reminder. With zero experience, I landed a job and navigated a program’s execution with minimal resources, from inception to realization. It's a reminder for me, and many out there seeking employment, that all it takes is one person who believes in our potential.
