Let’s all take a page from the book of Oscar-winning actor Lou Gossett Jr., a true believer in the humanity of people who fought racism with dignity and humor.
Humanity is defined by acquiring the ability to love, have compassion, have empathy, and be rational. By merging these definitions, we can understand that to deserve the right to be called human, we need to have the ability to love, have compassion, have empathy and be rational.
These qualities have the ability to change any person's path and life, particularly those in marginalized, underserved and disproportionately impacted areas. And this individual change, as small as it may be, will have a ripple effect, because it will affect their family and friends, workplaces, neighborhood and community - whether in a direct or an indirect way.
Unfortunately, we are living in a time affected by political extremists (ie, DEI naysayers) who come from different sets of beliefs. Extremism seeks to unite people from all different beliefs under one common purpose: "Be like me, or I will focus on erasing your existence."
This is the time to stand up and speak out for the humanity of all people regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age, political affiliation, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and disabilities. Don't wait for an invitation or until it becomes personal. Be determined to make an impact, have some courage. Use the power of your words and be heard.
The concept of humanity is derived from the love and compassion that humans have towards each other. It is a virtue that is consistent across all nations and cultures. Let's continue to strive for humanity in all that we do and all that we say. Let’s try to be more like Lou. May he Rest in Power.♥️
