Founder & CEO of Viable Solutions LLC-Fetal Echo Education Consultant | Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer
When I first started scanning as an MFM sonographer, I did not have a clear understanding of WHY I was assessing the fetal heart. I only knew what images to obtain and even that was dodgy. Cine clips were definitely not on my fetal heart agenda. No one told me how important they are, or why they are necessary to demonstrate normal and abnormal structures. Something we have to get retrain ourselves is to just “take the picture” and move on. That’s not enough. We must be diligent when assessing the fetal heart and really take the time to watch the atrioventricular and semilunar valves. To make sure we visualize the pulmonary artery exiting the right ventricle as it crosses the aorta anteriorly, to help rule out transposition of the great arteries. Sonographers play a vital role in direct patient care, so they deserve more than being told to just “take the pictures”. We need to know the “why”, so we can provide the best diagnostic images we can. We also need to be up to date with the best practices. Cine clips are very important and I always advise sonographers to utilize this practice. Even if your system won’t allow you to capture many cine clips due to storage, get in the habit of sweeping through the heart and sitting still and just watching the heart squeeze and the valves move…these habits will help you fully assess the fetal heart to the best of your ability. 🫀 #sonographereducation #cineclips #educationsaveslives (Cine clip demonstrating the normal orientation of the great arteries)

The Power of Putting People First in Radiology: A Reflection on UKIO 2024 While I couldn't be physically present at UKIO 2024 due to unforeseen visa complications, the theme this year, "Vision and Values: Putting People First," truly resonated with me. The focus on patient-centered care in radiology is a topic I find endlessly fascinating, and I eagerly awaited insights from the conference. As a radiographer with a deep commitment to person-centered care, I believe this approach is paramount in our field. It's more than just acquiring high-quality images; it's about understanding the person behind the scan, their anxieties, and their unique needs. By prioritizing clear communication, empathy, and a holistic view of the patient, we can not only enhance their experience but also potentially improve clinical outcomes. The discussions at UKIO 2024, I'm sure, addressed crucial questions: How can we ensure patient-centered care becomes the norm in radiological practice? What impact will this shift have on patient care delivery? While I missed the opportunity to engage with fellow radiographers and learn firsthand, the theme itself reignited my passion for this approach. It's a constant reminder that behind every image lies a human story, and our ability to acknowledge it significantly impacts their journey. For my fellow radiographers, I urge you to embrace this philosophy. Let's champion person-centered care in our daily interactions. By fostering a culture of empathy and open communication, we can elevate the patient experience and truly fulfill our role as compassionate healthcare professionals. TeleScan’s efficient workflow prioritizes expanding access to ultrasound without sacrificing quality, and you know we love to provide all the numbers that back up that claim. But sometimes, there’s nothing quite like a good story to prove a point. Here are three that we want to share with you today: First, the inspiration for TeleScan came from a meeting with a hospital in rural Kansas. This was a location that would take at least six months to staff using an onsite model. We knew there had to be a better way. Last month, we brought TeleScan to its first site in Kansas—to a small, underserved town of only 5,000 people. Second, most of our partners come to us with a 4-week wait until the next available ultrasound appointment. But when they augment their ultrasound care with TeleScan, they often agree with one of our partners in Texas, who said, “I never dreamed of seeing so many patients in a day!” Lastly, the sonographer shortage is reflected in the recruiting cycles and signing bonuses required to get one of these specialized professionals on your team. We’ve heard so much about this from our partners. Here’s our advice: if you can hire a sonographer, do it. Their skillset and dedication to the industry are worth every penny. But if you struggle to hire this role, like one partner who tried for nine months, you’ll agree with one of our partner physicians who said, “TeleScan holds great promise in helping clinics overcome staffing hurdles!” If you’d like to learn more about TeleScan—including all the numbers behind it—visit our new webpages at https://hubs.ly/Q02sspJh0. #telescan #telesonography #maternalhealth #maternalmortality #sonographershortage #remotesonographer

"Radiologist Committed to Excellence in Healthcare, Research, and Community Empowerment | Author, Researcher, Social Worker | Proud Member of IRIA, IMA, NMO and NSS"
'It's a blessing when your job and passion in life are the same' Exactly how I feel about my work as a Radiologist. I specialize in whole body Ultrasound, fetal scans, Vascular Doppler, Mammography, Digital xrays and radiological procedures, Ultrasound guided biopsy and drainage. A few years back I started my post graduate Residency programme in Radiology. My HOD Dr Jyotsana ma’am introduced us to the branch & said "Welcome to the best and most advanced branch in medicine"! As time went by & we were acquainted with all the fascinating Radiology branches..I understood the real impact of her words and the scope of this field .In three years I completed MD in Radiodiagnosis, and there was no looking back. Life in this branch has been really fascinating and fulfilling. Radiodiagnosis is truely the most rapidly advancing (in terms of technology ) and exciting branches in Modern medicine. It isn't called the " Eyes of medicine " for nothing. Radiologists are highly specialized doctors who use specific technologies (rays, ultrasound, magnetic waves, etc) for diagnosis and treatment of diseases....& are pretty much Indispensable in the medical field. Have to keep ourselves pretty updated with the frequent advances in technology and its applications. en Pro tip for Radiology residents : For every patient u see, try and follow up and study their findings on all modalities. Multimodality correlation helps gain deeper insights into disease diagnosis and its extent. #radiology #radiologist #radiologista #radiologylife #ultrasound #doppler #xray #fetal #womeninmedicine #doctorsmotto #indiandoctors #doctor_motivation_3 #doctor #doctors #doctorlife #radiologylife@ #medicolife

The radiologist shortage is definitely here. There are different ways to approach the market, and balancing short-term vs long-term plays is nontrivial. Leverage is great, but using too much can amplify negative downstream second-order consequences too. What’s happening now varies and what will happen is anyone’s guess, but this anonymous op-ed “Radiologists need to be realistic about the job market” is absolutely worth reading. https://lnkd.in/gAD5Kepb

To my cardiac sonographer friends (part eight ): *Right Parasternal View * Right parasternal view is valuable in the evaluation of the aortic root and ascending aorta; when these are dilated. Also ,this window is excellent view for profiling the superior and inferior vena cavae as they drain into the right atrium and profiling the Inter Atrial Septum(IAS). To do ,the probe (perpendicular to the chest wall)is placed in the second or third intercostal space at the right stemal edge, one intercostal space higher than that used for the standard left parastemal window,,then the probe marker is rotated toward the patient's left clavicle at approximately the 1 o'clock position (the same way as for imaging of the suprastemal Long Axis of the aorta),now to image the aorta), the probe is angled approximately 45° to the chest wall(thus, the probe is parallel to the long axis of the proximal ascending aorta). To image the IAS, the probe is angled towards the patient right, the atria. the IAS, and the superior and inferior vena cavae may be seen (in this view the IAS is oriented perpendicular to the ultrasound beam). #cardilogy #echocardiography
