We need to get a handle on this. The Far South Community Development Corporation is a HUD--Certified Housing Counseling organization that have and continues to assist thousands of renters at risk of evictions, especially during COVID-19. With the humanitarian crisis hitting Chicago and the State's finances, resources to assist renters are running dry. Chicago and the State need to develop a comprehensive and balanced plan before this adds another crisis that will further harm Chicago's south and west sides. Something seems off when there are thousands of vacant lots and buildings/homes on the south and west sides plus thousands of renters in need of affordable housing options. This is the same plug of our #BringingCommunitiesBackInitiative that seeks a balanced approach for not only new construction for single-and-multi-family housing but renovating existing housing and a holistic approach to housing services. From the article: "From January through September of this year, the Cook County sheriff’s office has enforced over 5,600 evictions. In 2022, the first full year after pandemic moratoria on evictions were lifted, the number of evictions enforced by the sheriff’s office stood at roughly 4,500,...Most evictions took place on the South and West sides in majority-Black and Latino communities, trends that line up with national data showing that racial minorities are more likely to face eviction." https://lnkd.in/gvedGG7D

Founder of Veterans Justice Project. Suicide Prevention Advocate. Military Veterans in Journalism. NYC Veterans Task Force NYC Persons With Living Experience
Where is the money? Where are our benefits? "While migrants are sleeping in luxury hotels, veterans are dying on NYC streets." --Trump The ratio of veterans receiving resources nationally is nearly TWICE of that in New York City. That is 100% on the New York City Council & NYC Department of Veterans' Services who have known about the abuses of homeless veterans while they're intentionally denied access to transitional resources for years with dozens of complaints, overdoses, assaults, and deaths. This wont work either because the City Council is giving that funding to DVS who will use it to fundraise in district offices with not a single dollar going to the veterans imprisoned in NYC violent, drug-invested shelters. "There is a significant gap between the number who receive federal benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and those who live in NYC —just 16.5%— compared to the national average of 27.8%." It's time for a Congressional Inquiry. https://lnkd.in/eerHu3r5

I have discovered I am not quite ready to retire from the work field. I have worked with At Risk populations all my life and for the last 8 years it's been with homeless families and youth. I am that individual who doesn't just want to put someone in housing for the sake of saying I got this person a place to stay. What about teaching what it will take to stay housed... take care of your children, increase employment skills, and not settling to just have a job that will not afford you the opportunity to remain housed. How can a leader in the field of decreasing homelessness make statements like " it is only our job to house them, it's not our job to keep them housed, "oh, I fudged a little on the application when I filled it out for her, but just trying to get her out of here because she has so many barriers. Is that fair to the landlord you just got to lease to the person by withholding the truth. Should meeting number criteria just to obtain a grant be more important than ending homelessness? What has happened to integrity? Perhaps that is why some of today's leaders are candidly expressing their preference to employ younger people in the field of homeless because they quote.: only care about data and not the homeless woman, man, or child. I need to hear feedback from those who really care about eliminating homelessness, not those who just have a title and only interested in data... and surely not from the one who responds according to who she is speaking in front of. I don't ever want a job bad enough to sell my soul, compromise my integrity, or lose my authentic self.
