At first thought, painting a wall white sounds simple. Then, when you’re faced with “which white?” you realize that it’s not simple at all. You can find an “ultra-white” that has minimal undertones, but that will often feel too stark. So, as you’re deciding which white is best for you, it’s best to try and determine what undertone is best for your design and the type of light your space gets. Are you looking for something cooler with gray or blue undertones? Or something warmer with creamy or yellow undertones? You can also lean towards a blush. It’s important to choose several options that you like, and then do samples of the colors in your space. This will help you see what it looks like in the space with your belongings, and, more importantly, see how the white changes as the lighting changes throughout the day. Below I’m sharing my three favorite white paint colors, as seen in Abode Virtual Design’s Home Design Guide - our free downloadable guide that is filled with my favorite and most-used design tips! Benjamin Moore OC-65 Chantilly Lace This is my number 1 go-to, especially if you’re looking for a paint with minimal undertone, but isn’t going to pull too gray. It may lean cool for some, but I don’t find it to be stark, and I love that there isn’t any yellow undertone to it. Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove White Dove is another classic, but it’s warmer than Chantilly Lace. In some lights it will still feel quite neutral. It has creamy undertones. Benjamin Moore OC-45 Swiss Coffee Swiss Coffee is the warmest of the three, with green, gray and yellow undertones. The benefit though, is that it typically won’t lean too far one way or another. Instead, it feels quite rich. Which white is your favorite? For more information on our design services, and to find our free e-book, head to www.abodevirtual.com.

Why I love surface pattern design - Patterns are everywhere: they’re on curtains, clothing, accessories, dishes, cups, napkins, wallpaper, furniture, towels, linens, and on, and on. They provide the aesthetic and they give products their own unique voice. - Patterns are a blend of illustration and graphic design - beauty with a dash of pragmatism: I love that I’m never choosing between two disciplines while I’m designing a pattern. Patterns are illustrated designs, basically, and they demand a bit of work from both the left and right sides of my brain to do them justice. - Patterns can be quite dubious and sometimes even challenging to create: occasionally, I might find myself struggling with a repeat or graphic design element for far longer than it took me to illustrate the motifs. - Patterns love to be weird: they’re observed through a very different lense, with an entirely unique job to do, and even the most obscure ideas can work quite well with the right product and color choices. I’ll leave you with one of my first and still one of my favorite patterns. I’ve yet to decide where it should live. Cheers ICEBIRDS👇

Master the Art of Grunge Texture: A Step-by-Step Guide for Designers These textures are rather grimy and rough, yet they still remain popular among designers who want to avoid hyper-cleaning up of design. This guide explains everything you should know to effectively apply grunge texture into your designs for character and depth. What is a Grunge Texture? Grunge texture is an element of design that imitates the rough and roughened, outside and inside appearances of actual objects. You know, paint which is peeled off or a dull concrete or wooden surface which has gone through the vagaries of weather without flinching. Despite its origins in the Grunge movement of the 1990’s it has be continued to be a popular style in modern design. They are mostly applied in digital artwork, posters, branding, as well as in the webs. This paper aims at answering the following questions: Why use Grunge Texture in design? There’s so much more to grunge textures than meets the eye, they are texturized narratives that are not just visual, but emotional. By adding grunge texture, your designs can: · Be genuine and have personality. · Get out of a rigid design approach of polished look. · Give the viewer something to look at that is different and that will stimulate their curiosity. · They help evoke certain feeling such the nostalgia or rebelliousness. 📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥-𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 Designing the full-color interior of a book is a balance of artistry and functionality. To create a visually stunning and reader-friendly experience, here are some key fundamentals and how to apply them: 𝟏. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲: Choose a color palette that complements the book's theme and content. Tools like Adobe Color can help you choose colors that enhance each other. 𝟐. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲: Select fonts that are legible against colored backgrounds. Testing light text on dark colors or vice versa ensures readability, while maintaining visual appeal. 𝟑. 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬: Make sure to keep images, text, and white space in harmony. Too much clutter distracts from the message; clean design invites engagement. 𝟒. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲: Use stronger colors to draw the eye to more important parts, like headings, and less prominent colors for subheadings, and black for body text. Don’t make minor details, such as page numbers, stand out so much that they distract the reader. 𝟓. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞: Ensure consistent use of design elements like fonts, headings, and color schemes. A professional look requires seamless transitions between chapters, keeping the reader’s focus on the content. Full-color interior book design is an art that enhances storytelling, capturing readers' attention with striking visuals while maintaining clarity and professionalism. As a bestselling, award-winning book designer with over 20 years of experience, I’ve learned that creating harmony between text and color is key to drawing attention to your book and delivering a memorable reading experience. New typeface — CoFo Holz: https://lnkd.in/gkQK5UKr CoFo Holz is an expressive serif typeface with unapologetic character. It counterbalances sharpness and softness, combining triangular wedge serifs with circular dots and terminals. The design creates a playful tension of simple geometric shapes by incorporating a modern modular feel within a classic serif typeface. The ideological and stylistic inspiration behind CoFo Holz come from two sources—18th Century Engravings and American Wood Type—both known for their particularly exaggerated pointed serifs. Reflecting on this historical context of letters carved from wooden blocks, we named it “Holz,” a German word for “wood.” CoFo Holz goes beyond its traditional references and transforms them into a contemporary functional design. From Thin to Black, all styles retain their distinctive character by balancing the contrast between thick and thin elements. Encapsulating elegance and playfulness, the font offers a wide range of uses. Fresh and versatile, CoFo Holz can bring sophistication and charm to any design project.
