❓ Why should understanding their position in society matter to a transit hub? ❓ And how can knowing this help improve every aspect of its efficiency? When considering social placemaking – the intentional design and curation of a space to promote a sense of community and belonging – a venue should first consider the impact of building a more welcoming environment. In our most recent blog post, we explore the impact of social placemaking ideals and how GoodMaps can help venues to become dynamic and sustainable hubs. 📃 https://hubs.li/Q02qM8PV0 #MappingTheFuture #SocialPlacemaking #SustainableTravel #tech4good — Also, don’t forget to check out the video on our partnership with Port of Portland, which highlights the ever-present need to consider a venue’s impact on all of society. ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

Dear friends and colleagues, As you may know, the City of Santa Monica has the option to close the Santa Monica Airport at the end of 2028. The city is seeking input from neighbors on what the future of the Santa Monica Airport site should be. The first such opportunity to share your thoughts and participate in this process is this Sunday, May 19th, from 11AM to 3PM at Clover Park. Come, participate, and let your voice be heard! Every city holds a unique place in the hearts of its inhabitants, a unique pull that binds people to the streets they walk, the neighborhoods they inhabit, and the shared memories they create. For me, Santa Monica is more than just a city—it's a tapestry of personal history, shared community, and a platform for impactful change. The story of Santa Monica is one of pioneering initiatives that have reshaped our community and made significant global impacts. Today, as the city continues to grapple with economic and societal challenges in the aftermath of COVID-19, we find ourselves at a critical crossroad. Santa Monica is ready for a revival. I believe there is an immediate and actionable opportunity to reestablish Santa Monica as an iconic and thriving innovation community, one that can once again lead the world in positive global change. This revitalization stands to benefit not only residents, but also tourists, businesses, and neighboring cities. Central to this vision is the future utilization of the Santa Monica Airport site. I see a potential to transform this space into a 'Great Innovation Park'—a landmark that could become a beacon of pride for all of Santa Monica. With the rapid evolution of technology, especially in the realm of sustainable transportation, I believe that Santa Monica, with its rich history and vibrant community, could serve as the perfect setting for a dynamic blend of artists, designers, entrepreneurs and engineers, to shape an ecosystem geared towards a more sustainable future. The Great Innovation Park concept would include open spaces for recreation, a beautiful sustainable multimodal transit hub to decongest vehicular traffic on our streets, and a center for innovation and STEAM education to train Santa Monica students for the green economy jobs of the future. Attached, please find additional information on the May 19th community kick-off event, as well as more details on what the Great Innovation Park could be. Please share with your friends and neighbors! I look forward to seeing you there.

🌍 New Partnership Announcement: BLOXHUB x WRLDCTY 🌍 We are excited to announce our partnership with WRLDCTY, a leading global event platform for urbanists. This collaboration, unveiled at the WRLDCTY conference in Bilbao, marks the beginning. Together, we will explore exciting formats such as joint media productions and hosting urbanists in Copenhagen to learn more about our sustainable practices. Our colleagues, Jakob Norman-Hansen (Director for Global Networks & Partnerships) and Ann-Britt Elvin Andersen (Chief Communication Officer), are leading this initiative. Reach out to them to learn more. We believe that partnerships like these are crucial in today’s world. As Helle Søholt, Chair of our Board, highlighted during her session, the future of cities will be driven by: 💡 Climate action: Cities will increasingly develop climate accounts, implement mitigation and adaptation strategies, and use natural solutions to regenerate urban spaces and bring people closer to nature. 💡 Social infrastructure: Cities are not just about physical spaces; they are social ecosystems. The future will see a focus on creating inclusive, affordable, and equitable cities, addressing pressing housing issues and ensuring that everyone benefits from urban opportunities. 💡 Second-tier city revival: As we look forward, smaller cities may become hubs of innovation, leapfrogging larger ones in tackling climate and social challenges. 💡 Existing infrastructure revitalization: Some of the most sustainable cities will be those that successfully build on existing infrastructure, revitalizing their town and city centers to address social and economic challenges. Helle also emphasized that change can often come from small, distributed efforts — what we call the "massive small strategy." By engaging people and creating a new language of kindness and care in urban development, we can collectively shape the future of cities. It was also great to see our member, Daria (Dasha) Krivonos from the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies, take the stage. Their forward-thinking contributions are an essential part of shaping sustainable and resilient cities. Additionally, The Bay Urban Visioning Awards showcased the truly global nature of WRLDCTY, reflected in the diverse nominees and winners from around the world. These projects exemplify innovative urban solutions that are not only transforming local communities but also setting benchmarks for cities globally. Think about your daily errands: grocery shopping, a doctor's appointment, a quick bite with friends. What if most of these, and more, were accessible within a 15-minute walk or cycle from your doorstep? That's the vision behind the 15-Minute City concept, an urban revolution sweeping across the globe. Paris' "La ville du quart d’heure" (the quarter-hour city) initiative, led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, is a shining example. This ambitious plan prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists, emphasizing hyper-proximity and multipurpose localities. Public spaces are reimagined, the urban landscape is transformed, and daily tasks become surprisingly convenient. As cities confront the challenges of the future, the 15-Minute City emerges as a beacon of hope. It transcends being a mere planning concept; it represents a vision for a healthier, happier, and more sustainable future for our urban communities. Yet, as cities worldwide embrace the 15-Minute City model, what distinctive challenges and opportunities do you foresee for different regions and contexts? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below! #CITIES #UrbanPlanning #SmartCities #15MinuteCity
