Last week Graham A Hayward and Jeremy Robinson joined the Accommodation for Students Renters’ Right Act Webinar with Ryan Heaven.  Although we are still waiting for the third reading it was a really insightful session discussing everything we know so far.  Some of our key takeaways included: - Taking a co-signer (be it international or UK) is going to become even more important where there is no rent in advance. - Termly payments will be gone. - There are no issues with tenants paying upfront, however, it has to be their choice. - University Halls will be exempt. - PBSA properties are not currently exempt but are expected to be. We are currently having many conversations with our partners and monitoring the updates closely. A timely and important article in the @Business Post this weekend from @Colm Lauder. Having developed PBSA properties globally, including close to 4,000 beds across Dublin and Cork, I've seen first-hand the impact that Government intervention and planning policies have had in Ireland. For example, development costs are up to 50% more costly in Ireland than elsewhere in Europe. This has implications for developers, investors, and our students. GSA is committed to being part of the solution. #BeforeAndAfterWithSSETS Week Four is no doubt the most stressful in my #SSETS journey thus far. First, the concept note. Developing a concept note has to be one of the most challenging engagements in academic work. Then, forming my money crew to align with the concept note, and searching for grants and donors to support the project. Oh, finally floating Club Corporate, something I wanted to do for over ten years, was no easy task. Headhunting students, grouping them to identify and prioritise problems, proposing ways to address them, getting a professional to kickstart the engagement with them, and making a video alongside, all within five days, was wow! #ClubCorporate It is good to be challenged – to undergo similar stress students are often subjected to. This is the most impactful training I have received for a very long time. The training and assessment are done remotely but are even more profoud than physical assessment. Finally, I had to develop a proposal brief for a whole week of training on commercial dispute resolution. A post about the Special Sheffield Sauce...(and no, it's not Henderson's Relish)... What a week! Started off with a visit with Dr Ibby Ullah and colleagues to Sheffield's Olympic Legacy Park as part of the council's Economic Development & Skills Committee. A real insight into the amazing work taking place across its site - from cutting edge healthcare and research, to hosting international sporting events, providing a home to technological and commercial innovation, and finding opportunities for local students who have found mainstream school too challenging. And that's just a tiny example of what's going on there. What impressed me most was the synergy between so many of the organisations - and with the new government's national missions. I can see how it's ready for its next stage of growth. Later that day we had briefings on the council's developing Growth Plan and Culture Strategy (and of course there was the Employment and Skills strategy from the last committee meeting). All of these fit together and show the world that we are open for business - but in a way that works for our city. That means being clear about our strengths, putting in the infrastructure needed to support growth, ensuring our young people and those returning to work are getting trained in the right skills, and making our city an attractive place to live and work in. But all with that special Sheffield sauce - which for me, is something around our spirit of independence, our creativity and our kindness. That's what has inspired our #Heartofthecity development, ensuring we're not like every other city centre. It's part of why we have so many small and medium, independent businesses and a history of makers and creators. It's why people who study and visit here want to stay ('it's not this friendly down south!')
