🌟🌟MABO DAY, 3 JUNE, 2024🌟🌟 🖤💙💚🤍Mabo Day, celebrated on June 3rd every year, holds profound significance for Torres Strait Islanders and Indigenous Australians as across our country. Today marks the anniversary of the landmark High Court decision in 1992, which recognized the land rights of the Meriam people, traditional owners of the Murray Islands in the Torres Strait. 🔹Land Rights Recognition: The Mabo decision overturned the legal doctrine of "terra nullius," which falsely claimed that Australia was uninhabited before European settlement. This ruling acknowledged that Indigenous peoples have rights to their land that existed before colonization and continue to exist. 🔹Awa Eddie Mabo's Legacy: The case is named after Awa Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander whose tireless advocacy for land rights and justice for his people led to this historic legal victory. His determination and leadership have made him a symbol of the struggle for Indigenous land rights in Australia. 🔹Cultural Validation: The Mabo decision provided legal validation of the continuous connection Indigenous Australians have with their land and culture. For Torres Strait Islanders, it reinforced the significance of their cultural heritage and traditions tied to their ancestral lands. 🔹Foundation for Native Title: The Mabo ruling paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993, which established a framework for Indigenous Australians to claim and protect their land rights. This has been a crucial step in recognizing and preserving Indigenous land ownership and cultural practices. 🔹National Reconciliation: Mabo Day is a time for reflection on the injustices faced by Indigenous Australians and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation. It serves as a reminder of the need to address historical wrongs and work towards equality and justice for Indigenous communities. Mabo Day is a significant milestone in Australian history, symbolizing the recognition of Indigenous land rights, the importance of cultural heritage, and the enduring impact of Eddie Mabo's fight for justice. It is a day of celebration, reflection, and continued advocacy for Indigenous rights and reconciliation. 🖤💙💚🤍 ✨Melisa✨ 💎INSPIRE💎EMPOWER💎DESTINY💎 #MaboDay #blaqdiamondswe #zendathkes #TorresStraitIslands

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw holds Indigenous Rights and Title on the lands and waters within our territory and has the authority to make decisions about how to govern and manage land use activities. External stakeholders must consult with the Nation on any potential projects or activities that may affect Rights and Title. These consultation requests are submitted through SquamishConnect.com, the Nation’s online referrals portal. ✅One role of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ (Rights & Title) department is to evaluate the requests and ensure that Squamish interests in the territory are being protected. Each referral is carefully evaluated through multiple perspectives to make sure that all the Nation’s considerations and requirements are met. The Nation’s consent must be granted before any proposed activities in the territory can take place. 🎥To learn more about the referral process, and Squamish Connect, check out this video!

The film addresses the critical issue of fabricated criminal cases in Uzbekistan, stemming from witness testimonies and confessions obtained through intimidation, beatings, and torture, as illustrated by several trials during I. Karimov's rule. These practices, largely a legacy of Stalin's era where confessions were considered the "queen of evidence," underscore significant historical and ethical concerns. Changing these practices is crucial for Uzbekistan's progression towards a civilized, modern society. The documentary's focus on this pivotal yet often neglected aspect of the justice system is extremely commendable . Its capacity to educate, stimulate thought, and drive change makes it a vital tool for deepening the understanding of Uzbekistan's current state. My thanks to Noah Tucker , team and Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs for creating such an impactful film.

#Unexonerated Uzbekistan: "Maybe in my life I will never be able to build a house for my family...," says Habibullo, who spent more than 21 years in prison labeled as an "extremist" by the Karimov regime. There are thousands of Habibullos, as this compelling film points out. Habibullo's father Ahmadjon Madumarov, human rights activist, had three sons behind bars at the same time for decades. Today, we commemorate Mabo Day, a pivotal moment in Australia's history. This day marks the anniversary of the landmark High Court decision in 1992, which recognized the land rights of the Meriam people, traditional owners of the Murray Islands in the Torres Strait. Eddie Mabo, a passionate advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples land rights, spearheaded this groundbreaking case. His unwavering dedication challenged the long-standing legal doctrine of terra nullius, which falsely claimed that Australia was a land belonging to no one prior to European settlement. Mabo's victory was not just a legal triumph but a monumental step toward justice and recognition for First Nations Australians. It paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993, transforming the landscape of Indigenous rights in Australia. On this day, let us reflect on the importance of Mabo’s legacy: Acknowledging Indigenous Sovereignty: Recognising the traditional custodians of the land. Advancing Legal and Social Justice: Fighting for equality and the rights of Indigenous communities. Celebrating Cultural Heritage: Valuing the rich history and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As we honor Eddie Mabo and his monumental achievements, let's also commit to continuing the journey toward reconciliation and justice for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. #MaboDay #IndigenousRights #EddieMabo #LandRights #Reconciliation #CulturalHeritage #SocialJustice #firstnations

🌍 Nunavut's Creation: A Global Example of Indigenous Allyship and UNDRIP Principles in Action 🌍 As we mark significant milestones since the creation of Nunavut, it's pivotal to consider the broader implications of this historical event, not just within Canada but as a global example of indigenous allyship and the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) brought to life. Nunavut’s establishment as a territory represents a profound exercise in allyship between the Canadian government and the Inuit people. It showcases how collaboration and mutual respect for the rights and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples can lead to meaningful self-determination. This journey towards creating Nunavut underscores the importance of listening to, supporting, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities in their quest for autonomy and governance over their lands and resources. Moreover, Nunavut embodies the spirit of UNDRIP, which asserts Indigenous Peoples' right to self-determination, cultural preservation, and participation in decision-making. The process leading to Nunavut's creation, grounded in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, serves as a concrete example of UNDRIP principles in action, demonstrating the potential for Indigenous and non-Indigenous cooperation to achieve significant outcomes in governance and community development. The global community can learn much from Nunavut's example, especially in the context of upholding and implementing UNDRIP. It illustrates the practical steps nations can take to recognize and act upon the rights of Indigenous Peoples effectively. Through genuine allyship and adherence to international frameworks like UNDRIP, we can support Indigenous communities worldwide in their efforts to protect their cultures, lands, and rights. As professionals, policymakers, and global citizens, let's draw inspiration from Nunavut’s story to foster stronger allyship with Indigenous communities. By advocating for the application of UNDRIP principles in our respective spheres of influence, we contribute to a more just, equitable, and respectful world for all Indigenous Peoples. Let Nunavut's journey remind us of the power of allyship and the critical role of international frameworks like UNDRIP in advancing Indigenous rights and self-determination worldwide. #Nunavut #IndigenousRights #UNDRIP #GlobalAllyship #IndigenousSelfDetermination #CulturalPreservation #SustainableDevelopment
