Pillsbury took the worst part of toaster strudel and put MORE of it in each box 🤯 That brings one serving to 27 grams of sugar, but still just 1 pathetic gram of fiber and 5 entire grams of protein. But seriously…this is why we need natural foods CPG startups. It’s so important. Americans are dying from diet-related diseases and this is what we get from big food co’s. CPG is such a tough business, but it is making a difference. It does matter. This is just a sign that big food companies don’t get it, they can’t truly innovate because they can’t risk a dip in quarterly earnings. What’s the secret to moving nutritious food and produce around the world? “The cold chain,” says Christina Wang, MBA ’23, “enables us to introduce diversity and abundance into our diet.” Working as a food investor, Wang became fascinated with the cold chain, a refrigerated #supplychain intricately linking growers, distributors, retailers, and consumers on a global scale. But when this supply chain falters, Wang says the repercussions are felt far and wide. Like other supply chains, the cold chain proved susceptible to disruptions during the pandemic. “Between the revenue loss from spoiled food and the costs associated with that extra dry ice I now [had] to budget for in the deliveries, I couldn't help but wonder, how can we make this better?” Wang recalls. Wang saw a chance for a paradigm shift in the way we envision the future of the cold chain. “The pandemic gave us an opportunity to rethink and reimagine what the future cold chain should look like,” she says. “Think about the whole ecosystem. ❌ THE ULTRA-PROCESSED PROBLEM ❌ I recently read Ultra-Processed People by Chris Van Tuleken, and it’s left me thinking more about ingredients lists, and less about front of pack indicators (like calories, fat, and salt 🚦) than ever before🧐… Here's what I’ve learned about Ultra-Processed Foods: 🌭Their smooth, pre-processed texture (a UPF hallmark) leads to reduced feelings of fullness and sharper blood sugar spikes 📈 (as well as those drowsy drops after eating 🥱). 👅 Artificial flavourings mess with our intuitive eating responses - activating enzymes🧪, based on taste, to process nutrients that never arrive (causing over-eating and cravings). 👽Artificial sweeteners and emulsifiers damage the gut lining, as they're alien chemicals which our bodies aren’t evolved to process😫. Despite their known links to the most common causes of death, UPFs are more affordable and accessible for consumers than freshly prepared food products are in 2024🤯🌍. There are various reasons for our food system 🥗 failing our people 👯 and we’re on a mission, at martee ai, to address one of the big ones 🚀.
