Personally, a sad day for me. The original catsup-colored "Red Box" idea was a kiosk stocked with high-quality/low-price produce, milk, eggs, cheese, and other traditional grocery store items. Leveraging McDonald's supply chain and real estate footprint, I drew the concept on scrap paper during a brainstorming session with innovative leaders from across the global McDonald's system. Market testing of what became Redbox indicated consumers liked the kiosk for stamps(?) and CD's. Over time, the concept evolved to DVD rentals. Redbox created real economic benefit for McDonald's and subsequent owners of the brand. And, consumers loved the concept. So, maybe, I shouldn't be all that sad. It is rare that a sketch ever becomes tangible or delivers return. Redbox did - and for far longer than many would have guessed. Beyond Redbox, Project 361 - the innovative program Mats Lederhausen launched as head of McDonald's strategy group - unlocked a wave of innovation that - I would argue - has kept an iconic brand fresh, relevant, and at the leading edge of using digital to connect with and expand consumer engagement. Thanks for the experience Redbox. --------- Becky Yerak - great reporting The Wall Street Journal: https://lnkd.in/gUeSFRrt
Sometimes John, we need to let go things we helped create!
So sad to see the end of what once was a strong brand. I personally saw the same decline for another once eclectic brand: Tuesday Morning. The key word is relevance. Freshness, innovation and strategic vision are the hallmarks of longevity. I lobbied hard for the name Red Box at its birth with a passionate group of business entrepreneurs living in the McDonalds ecosystem. What an honor!
Redbox should’ve gone into streaming before or at the same time as Netflix did the same. The writing was all on the wall. I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how somebody could miss that enormous changing consumer behavior.
Strategic Pivot time? Redbox for fries? Warm and changed twice a day? We have a kiosk for cupcakes nearby in Palm Beach County and it's a big hit late night. The owner has a camera on it and was amazed to see line the first few nights after she launched it.
Chin up! We loved our Red Box kiosk. Not many people get to invent something so instantly recognizable and enjoyed.
Sad for Redbox. Very cool the product was your idea!

3moInspiring! Indeed the RedBox unleashed a lot of fresh ideas and energy. Most importantly, and perhaps an unsung positive outcome, was the eye opening experience that technological innovation and learning imparted to a world of McDonald’s Operations executives. I was one of those beneficiaries 👍
