My colleague Jesús Fernández Muñoz and I had a pleasure to attend the Latam Corporate Finance and Treasury Forum by Latinafinance.net held in Paris last week! We were delighted to participate in insightful discussions among treasurers, CFOs and finance professionals of European multinational corporations engaged in Latin America and the Caribbean. I would like to remark two takeaways from these discussions: 1. The vital role that the private sector must play, both in leveraging the opportunities that Latin America and the Caribbean have, and in driving the region’s economic and social development. 2. The breadth of prospects that the region’s deep relations with Europe can create for corporates and investors alike. Finally, the forum also gave us an opportunity to discuss and share insights with fellow treasury practitioners on how IDB Invest manages its local currency business in Brazil and elsewhere in the region, highlighting the importance of local currency financing for the private sector going forward. We want to thank Latinafinance.net for their kind invitation to this forum. #IDBInvest #IDBTreasury #LatinaFinance #PrivateSectorFinancing #LocalCurrency #Europe #LatinAmerica #Caribbean

The pleasure is always mine Mosidi Modise! We are half way through the year and there are so many good stories happening across the continent. Aside from the #TwoPotSystem we discussed and Absa Corporate and Investment Banking’s market views in general, there are big moves happening in energy and trade across Africa. Kenya continues to push in geothermal and wind, South Africa has had 171 days of no load-shedding and Morocco has one of the largest solar installations in the world in the form of Noor Solar Complex. Of course there are challenges in places like Zambia which only expects a respite in January but that too shall be fixed. A game changer in the form of the African Continental Free Trade Area is on the horizon with 54 of 55 African countries having signed. Essentially a single market of 1.3 billion - this has the potential to cure the disease of unfair tariffs that has crippled intra-continental trade and put a drag on self-generated growth…an under appreciated aspect of Asia’s growth. Some say it’s too little, some say too late and some say it’s too slow but we believe that the stars are aligning and that when they do, it will be just in time. One foot over the other as the story unfolds… #yourstorymatters #absa #africa 🐼

🌍 Exciting news in the Development Finance sphere: The International Monetary Fund authorised the use of SDRs for the acquisition of hybrid capital instruments issued by Prescribed Holders, such as Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs). This decision marks a pivotal moment, as it expands the scope of SDR prescribed operations to include investments in hybrid capital instruments. Congratulations to the African Development Bank Group and the Inter-American Development Bank, who have developed this proposal under which member countries may channel SDRs as hybrid capital contributions to help expand their lending capacity. By leveraging SDRs to acquire hybrid capital instruments, MDBs can enhance their financial capacity to support sustainable projects and initiatives in the region. This development underscores the collaborative efforts within the global financial community to bolster economic resilience and promote inclusive growth. As we move forward, we're excited about the possibilities that this expanded use of SDRs presents for expanding MDBs lending. The SDR is an international reserve asset created by the IMF to meet the long-term global need to supplement the existing reserve assets of IMF members.
