Congratulations to Absolics Inc. on securing grant funding from a federal program aimed at enhancing domestic #computerchip manufacturing! As a subsidiary of the #SouthKorean conglomerate SK Group, Absolics specializes in manufacturing #glasssubstrates, a crucial material used in packaging computer chips. The company has successfully negotiated a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (#PMT) to receive up to $75 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. This funding will support the construction of a 120,000 square-foot facility in #Covington, #Georgia, focused on developing advanced substrate technology for #semiconductorpackaging. It's expected to create over 1,200 jobs, including 1,000 in construction and 200 in manufacturing and R&D, boosting innovation capacity at Georgia Institute of Technology and the local semiconductor talent pool. Absolics' glass substrates are slated to revolutionize advanced semiconductor packaging, leading to notable improvements in the performance and efficiency of #AI, high-performance computing, and #datacenter chips. While the market for advanced packaging substrates is currently dominated by Asia, this proposed #CHIPS investment is set to expand the US domestic supply of glass substrates, thus establishing a robust domestic #supplychain for computer chips and providing a substantial boost to U.S.-based semiconductor industry. #CHIPSAct #SemiconductorInnovation #AdvancedPackaging #TechIndustry #USManufacturing #AI #HighPerformanceComputing U.S. Department of Commerce

Congratulations to Absolics Inc. on its preliminary agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $75 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to help advance domestic glass substrate capabilities. Developing these capabilities is vital to U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing. In its letter of support, IPC wrote: "CHIPS funding must prioritize IC substrate fabrication...[T]he U.S. has no substrate fabrication facilities and is currently twenty years behind Asia-based market leaders. The country is in desperate need of state-of-the-art substrate advancement, know-how, and manufacturing capability. Next generation electronics are transitioning to ‘More than Moore’ solutions where integration of chiplets and passive devices need core materials that can be highly engineered for electrical and mechanical property optimization and can scale with ever increasing wiring density requirements." The Absolics announcement today is the first investment in IC substrates through the CHIPS incentive grants; it can't be the last! Substrates and packaging more broadly are driving advancements in semiconductor manufacturing. Again, congrats to the Sung Jin Kim, Gary (Hoseok) Park, and the entire Absolics team! #icsubstrates #silicontosystems #chips #semiconductor #advancedpackaging #chipsact

Oil & Energy Pricing Manager --- Logistics Pricing Leader: Loyalty Through Service and Communication
The U.S. Department of Commerce and Rogue Valley Microdevices (RVM) have signed a preliminary agreement for up to $6.7 million in funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. The proposed investment would support the construction of RVM's microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and sensor foundry facility in Palm Bay, Florida, nearly tripling RVM's manufacturing capacity. Key points: 1. RVM is one of the few U.S.-based pure play MEMS foundries, important for defense and biomedical industries. 2. The investment aims to strengthen domestic supply of MEMS devices on 300mm wafers and create over 75 jobs in Florida. 3. This is the first proposed CHIPS investment in a women- and minority-owned business. 4. The facility is expected to ship its first wafers in early 2025, with completion by mid-2025. 5. RVM plans to establish on-site childcare with STEM-based education.

📢 Industry Update: Major Boost for U.S. Semiconductor Manufacturing! 🇺🇸🔋 https://lnkd.in/e6Wvqxzm Here's more positive news for the semiconductor industry as it became "dangerously concentrated in just one part of the world," as Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy said. GlobalWafers Co., Ltd. has secured a $400 million U.S. grant to bolster their manufacturing capabilities in Texas and Missouri. This move is a significant step toward strengthening domestic production of critical electronic components, diversifying where chips are manufactured. At Direct Components, Inc., we see this as a major win for the industry. This investment not only enhances the supply chain resilience but also brings high-tech manufacturing back to U.S. soil, ensuring more reliable and efficient delivery of essential components. The grant underscores the growing importance of semiconductor production in the U.S. and promises to create jobs, drive innovation, and support the broader electronics ecosystem. Thanks to GlobalWafers for their commitment to advancing technology and supporting the domestic manufacturing landscape! The funding plan is part of the Chips and Science Act (the 13th award to be exact) and the company plans to invest $4 billion, creating 2,500 jobs. #SemiconductorIndustry #Manufacturing #USManufacturing #Electronics #IndustryNews #DirectComponents

I love reading about geopolitics and the larger dynamics that drive industry and commerce around the world. Case in point, I devour books, podcasts, and interviews with Peter Zeihan. He's recently re-released "The Accidental Superpower", one of his first books, with an update for everything that is happening now in the world. I highly recommend it. The interesting bit here for my LI fam, is that I'm very excited to and hopeful to watch manufacturing migrate back to North America. Globalization was beneficial to so many different countries, but I believe we are seeing the end of that as we have come to know it since the end of World War II. This coupled with the lessons we learned about supply chain disruption during the pandemic are going to drive growth here in North America like we've never seen before. Specifically, I'm hopeful for the semiconductor industry, and locally here in North Carolina, I'm following Wolfspeed's participation in this space very closely! The CHIPs Act, which was passed 2 years ago to revitalize and strengthen the domestic semiconductor industry. It provides financial incentives, including grants and tax credits, to encourage investment in manufacturing and research here in the US. The linked article below is wonderful news, as Wolfspeed has now been cleared to apply for this federal program to assist them in their efforts, which have already started with a new $5B facility being built right here in North Carolina! Kudos to Neill Reynolds and Gregg Lowe on this next step in innovation! Well done team. #manufacturing #semiconductors #geopolitics https://lnkd.in/e_QqVkYT

The #first #woman to receive Biden’s #CHIPS #funding wants more peers in the #semiconductor industry. "A first in CHIP funding. President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law in 2022 with the goal of reinvigorating the American semiconductor industry via billions of dollars of funding to leading companies in the sector. Until last week, all the companies receiving this funding had one thing in common: They were run by men. That has now changed thanks to Jessica Gomez, cofounder and CEO of Rogue Valley Microdevices, Inc. Valley Microdevices (RVM), an organization that manufactures microelectromechanical systems (#MEMs) for clients across the automotive, biomedical, industrial, and agricultural industries. ..."
