Crews on the Tennessee Department of Transportation Phase II I-24 Expansion Project in Hamilton County begin drilling for the new bridge on McBrien Road. Crews can also be seen installing the rebar cages that will support the cast-in-place concrete while it sets. Drilled-hole shafts like this are deep-foundation solutions capable of bearing large loads with high lateral resistance. • Phase II improvements will continue on I-24 from Spring Creek Road to Germantown Road and on I-75 from the bridge over the railroad to the East Brainerd Road exit. Specific improvements include widening both interstates, replacing existing concrete pavement along the I-24 section with asphalt, and restriping all interstate-to-interstate ramps to at least three lanes in each direction. In addition, the South Moore Road overpass, McBrien Road overpass and bridges over the CSX railroad on I-75 will all be replaced. • #drilledshafts #casing #heavyequipment #TDOT #CHA #heavycivil #infrastructure #civilengineering #construction #WBbuilds

It's National Excavation Safety Stand Down Week! Follow these tips to work safely in trenches: Never enter a trench unless: - It has been properly inspected by a competent person. - Cave-in protection measures are in place. - There is a safe way to enter and exit. - Equipment and materials are away from the edge. - It is free of standing water and atmospheric hazards. Prevent trench collapses: - Trenches 5 feet deep or greater require a protective system. - Trenches 20 feet deep or greater require a protective system designed by a registered professional engineer. Protective systems for trenches: - SLOPE or bench trench walls by cutting back the trench wall at an angle inclined away from the excavation. - SHORE trench walls by installing aluminum hydraulic or other types of supports to prevent soil movement. - SHIELD trench walls by using trench boxes or other types of supports to prevent soil cave-ins. #trenches #construction #WeBuildAmerica #NationalExcavationSafetyStandDownWeek
