But seriously folks.... In the not-so-distand future, AI will be unveiling the equivalent of three or four Nobel Physics research breakthroughs a month, then a week, then a day. I have no doubt that it will be able to solve the breakthrough energy source problem by writing code on nanoparticles and powering with the 0.04 percent is carbon dioxide in the air (burn the oxygen, feed the carbon to trees), 0.000524 percent is helium gas (float your car plane and rocket ships up off the ground without burning anything before taking off to Mars), and 0.000055 percent hydrogen (burn, baby, burn)!

AI for solar fuel photocatalysis: a multidisciplinary approach. In the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with the field of solar fuel photocatalysis emerges as an exciting frontier. Solar fuel photocatalysis—a process converting carbon dioxide into fuel using sunlight—presents a green alternative to fossil fuels. Despite significant advancements, such as band-gap engineering and optimization of site activity, achieving commercially scalable solutions remains a challenge. A pivotal aspect of this challenge involves not only discovering new catalyst materials but also optimizing their synergy with photoreactors. A photoreactor, essentially a solar-powered chemical reactor, is critical in maximizing the interaction between light and photocatalytic materials to ensure efficient energy conversion. Factors such as photogeneration, charge-carrier recombination, mass transfer efficiency, solar collection, and uniform light distribution are key to the effectiveness of a photoreactor. Addressing these multidimensional challenges requires a sophisticated approach, where machine learning—particularly physics-informed neural networks—can significantly contribute. A recent Perspective paper by Loh and coauthors (link below) discusses real-world data on photoreactors and material properties, illustrating how AI can guide us toward more efficient solar fuel production. By blending data analysis with domain knowledge, physics-informed machine learning emerges as a promising tool, breaking down traditional research barriers and facilitating integrated solutions that could unlock the full potential of solar fuel photocatalysis. Overall, this work underscores the importance of a holistic approach in addressing complex, multi-scale challenges. The fusion of AI with photocatalyst and photoreactor design holds great promise in advancing the transition towards renewable energy sources. AI Saves Researchers Years in Finding a Better Green Hydrogen Catalyst #Researchers at the University of Toronto have used AI to discover a more effective catalyst for green hydrogen production, saving years of trial and error. Led by PhD student Jehad Abed, the team trained #AI on 36,000 metal oxide combinations to find an alloy that could improve hydrogen production efficiency. The AI quickly identified a combination of ruthenium, chromium, and titanium, which proved to be 20 times more stable and long-lasting than existing options. The catalyst could make #green hydrogen production more cost-effective by reducing the need for expensive metals and increasing efficiency. Researchers will now test the alloy in real-world conditions to see if it can help scale green hydrogen as a clean #energy solution. https://lnkd.in/gyk6RCRV
