When Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction & Development embarked on a complex, multi-phased redevelopment of New York Penn Station, they needed a design that embraced innovation and high quality, while delivering value on an ambitious schedule — a tall order for a transit project in a major metropolitan city. To meet these goals, the MTA chose the alternative project delivery method known as design-build so they could make the most of their significant infrastructure investment. Design-build delivery integrates design and construction at the beginning of the project, making costs easier to forecast, fast-tracking the timeline, streamlining communication and promoting collaborative, innovative solutions. AECOM was the lead designer for the design-builder, Skanska, to deliver Penn Station’s revitalization across multiple project phases, including Phase 1, the new East End Gateway entrance, and Phase 2, an expansion of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) concourse. Balfour Beatty US broke ground on Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas. It’s the company’s first theme park dedicated to young children. Universal executives wouldn’t confirm the project’s cost, but Frisco expects the company to invest at least $550 million to build it.
