Major claims in quantum computing and superconducting research have crumbled as their results couldn't be reproduced, leaving the physics community worried about its reputation and future. These high-profile scandals are a wake-up call for the entire field. Last week, a united front of around 50 physicists, journal editors, and NSF representatives gathered at the University of Pittsburgh to confront the issue head-on. Grasping the precise energy landscapes of quantum particles can significantly enhance the accuracy of computer simulations for material sciences. These simulations are instrumental in developing advanced materials for applications in physics, chemistry, and sustainable technologies. The research tackles longstanding questions from the 1980s, paving the way for breakthroughs across various scientific disciplines. An international group of physicists, led by researchers at Trinity College Dublin, has developed new theorems in quantum mechanics that explain the “energy landscapes” of quantum particle collections. Their work resolves decades-old questions, paving the way for more accurate computer simulations of materials. This pedagogical paper explores the basics of quantum computing from the perspective of one of the leading techniques in qubit preparation: 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. It describes the most used trapping techniques and cooling methods, showing how they can be combined to implement basic 1-qubit gates, and the CNOT. The objective of this work is to expose to and train undergraduate students in quantum computing, one of the most exciting and recent applications of quantum mechanics. Finally, this work crowns the time I spent from 2018 to 2020 at the Department of Physics at the University of Houston, and gives me the honor of having my name written along with that of two great researchers. The 3rd Quantum Matters in Materials Science workshop (QMMS) sponsored by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a little over one month away! The QMMS workshop will be held as an in-person only event on Feb 21-22, 2024, registration is limited and spots are filling fast. Quantum nanoscience is the basic research area at the intersection of nanoscale science and quantum science that creates the understanding to enable development of nanotechnologies. It uses quantum mechanics to explore and use coherent quantum effects in engineered nanostructures. This may eventually lead to the design of new types of nanodevices and nanoscopic scale materials where functionality and structure of quantum nanodevices are described through quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement. With the growing work toward realization of quantum computing, quantum has taken on new meaning that describes the effects at this scale. Current quantum refers to the quantum mechanical phenomena of superposition, entanglement and quantum coherence that are engineered instead of naturally-occurring phenomena.

In a new result supported by Q-NEXT, scientists at the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin-Madison introduce a new hybrid quantum-classical algorithm called the LAS-USCCSD method, which is designed to solve complex #quantum chemistry problems efficiently.   🔗 https://lnkd.in/gbwGVy4e   The algorithm starts with a classical computation, calculating the basic structure and energy levels of a molecule by breaking it into smaller parts. It then selects the most important parameters, the variables that control the interaction energy between different parts of the molecule. Finally, the algorithm uses a quantum computing method called the variational quantum eigensolver to focus only on the important parameters. This makes the quantum part of the computation more efficient by reducing the amount of data the quantum computer must process.   The new LAS-USCCSD algorithm is more efficient than its predecessor LAS-UCCSD method. It requires fewer parameters to get accurate results, so calculations are faster and simpler. This reduced complexity makes it more practical to implement on near-term quantum computers.   The team tested the algorithm on molecules (H₂)₂, (H₂)₄, and trans-butadiene, as well as on a complex bimetallic molecule.
