If you have clients in your caseload who lack self-esteem, can’t say no, and blame themselves for everything, you may be working with clients who’ve been emotionally manipulated, controlled, and gaslit through a narcissistic relationship. Gaslighting and other forms of narcissistic abuse are insidious, often going unrecognized as your clients begin to doubt their own thoughts, feelings, and memories... Which is why we invite you to the 2nd Annual Narcissism & Gaslighting Summit to find out what today’s expert clinicians have to say about how you can help your clients regain control, protect their well-being and foster healthier dynamics. It is more insidious when law enforcement and the legal system chooses to believe the false narrative of the gaslighter, usually because of overvaluing their own judgment and being blind to their own personal biases of gender stereotypes and “the good old boys” halo effect. (Sometimes by honest accident, other times with unapologetic denial of the mistake, depending on their emotional capacity for humility. Humility is true greatness, btw.) Those professional mistakes create multiple layers of abuse…primarily from the perpetrator and secondarily from the system that is supposed to protect the innocent. Ironic (and unfortunate). If the victim attends church, and tries to get help there, those officials are also capable of believing the false narrative and adding secondary abuse, for the same reasons. If you Google the “Dunning–Kruger effect”, you will find a phenomenon that contributes to this gross injustice. https://lnkd.in/e2sS9rif It takes a seasoned mental health professional with domestic violence training to spot the most covert gaslighters. The best free, easy access resource to learn more is the Duluth Power and Control Wheel, and it’s related wheel diagrams. https://lnkd.in/esncccce Case example of a dark triad featured perpetrator, gaslighting a vulnerable domestic partner for fun, once stated to the victim, “You go ahead and tell anyone how I treat you in this house…the police, the pastor, anybody…and they will NEVER believe you, because I can control my emotions in public and you can’t." Stated with his finger to her nose, and an icy coldness that would send chills up your spine. Isolation of a victim from friends/ family to prevent exit to a safe living arrangement, is a huge clue of the true nature of the situation. Isolation to cut off the possibility of escape is most often premeditated from a calculating perpetrator. Other factors that are often manipulated to prevent the "just leave" include limited access to money, and responsibility for children/pets. Sometimes the problem is not lack of self-esteem, as the original post cites. Sometimes it is just the right combination of power and control dynamics that creates an impossible exit to safety. Gaslighting does not always look like a loud, abusive, easy-to-spot perpetrator and uneducated, pitiful victim. Gaslighting can also look like a cunning, well-dressed, easy-going, smooth talking and calm perpetrator. The more covert the perpetrator is, the harder it is to discern, from a professional perspective. For a narrative reference, in the Wonder Woman movie (2017), notice how Aries, the God of War, disguises himself…with weak features chosen intentionally, so no one would suspect his true identity of strength. The same is true of a covert DV perpetrator. They keep their behaviors “just below the radar” of detection. My post on the Power and Control Wheel details those abusive behaviors.
