A pharmacy on the South Island’s West Coast is helping spread the word about Nymbl, an ACC app helping to improve balance for older people. 🙌 If you visit the Westland Pharmacy in Hokitika, you might notice staff wearing a new badge that says: ‘Ask me about Nymbl’. 🗣️ They’ll tell you all about how Nymbl is designed to help older adults maintain their balance and show you how to download it for free on your smartphone. “Helping our older customers maintain their independence for as long as possible is really important to us,” says Marie Gill, the retail manager at Westland Pharmacy. “So when we were approached by ACC to see if we’d be willing to promote the app to our older customers, they got a resounding yes.” It’s helping to tackle a big problem. Falls are the most common cause of injury in New Zealand, accounting for 39 per cent of all ACC claims. 🚶 Every year, one-in-three people over 65 injure themselves in a fall. This figure rises to one-in-two for people over 80. Many of these falls result in serious injury, such as a hip fracture, hospitalisation or even death. “It’s a no-brainer really,” says pharmacy owner Graham Provis. “Many older people come in here to pick up their prescriptions, so we’re well-placed to promote this.” The Nymbl app is easy-to-use and fully-funded by ACC for all New Zealanders aged 50-plus. 📰 NEWS: Changes to the way repeat prescriptions are ordered means the NHS App will replace pharmacy ordering for the majority of patients. The NHS App will be the safest and easiest way for patients to request their repeat prescription. NHS Greater Manchester has produced a video to support people in using the NHS App. Practices will set their own date for this change and GPs will work closely with pharmacies to ensure patients who require additional assistance get special care and specific policies geared to their personal needs. PCB Chair, Luvjit Kandula FRPharmS, said: "Ordering repeat prescriptions through the NHS App means that GP practices can spend more time offering patient appointments and dealing with more complex issues. Just as importantly though, it can allow patients to feel more empowered." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVVn_jur #NHSApp #Pharmacy #GMPrimaryCare

JR lives with type 2 diabetes and works 10-11 hours a day driving a tractor for a local farm. It is difficult for JR to make medical appointments since their employer has very strict attendance guidelines. JR has ingrown toenails in the big toes, that cause a great deal of pain. Since they didn’t have time to come in for care, JR cut off half of their toenails on both feet to prevent an ingrown nail. As you inspect JR’s feet, you see that their big toes are swollen and red. You ask the provider to evaluate JR’s feet because you are worried. After the provider evaluates JR’s feet, they turn to JR and say, “Diabetics should never cut their toenails like this. It causes infection”. What is this an example of? Almost one in five of us are ignoring Optometrist prescriptions which spells a real problem when it comes to Aussies' health and wellbeing. Even more concerning is that that some people are unaware of what is covered under Medicare with 21 per cent saying they skip eye tests because of costs despite regular eye tests being fully covered. Bupa Optical & Hearing Director, Adrian Kemp said "it's concerning that some Australians may be needlessly going about their lives with vision impairments which may negatively impact their ability to be at their best at work, drive safely or learn to their full potential." "Amidst the current cost-of-living environment, it's vital people know that eye tests can be done quickly, can be bulk-billed for Medicare card holders and don't require a GP's referral."
