I had the pleasure of speaking at IBC today. My message to the technology vendors was simple: there’s so much cool tech out there, but the world moves very quickly – so we need practical solutions, not just more 'tech'. As a PSB when we think about where we want to innovate and differentiate – much like we do with content - we increasingly think about how we commission and convene the best ideas, as opposed to owning and building tech. For our viewers this means they will continue to get a uniquely curated streaming experience that’s not just algorithmic, which they can trust and rely on, and - important in today' sea of choice - which will surprise and delight with new ideas, alongside signposting their favourites. On streaming, the fragmentation of devices and operating systems challenges the notion of owning tech – otherwise you spend too much time turning the wheel on foundational tech as opposed to innovating. So we’re looking at creating a more platform approach-centred for streaming, which will allow us to deliver a step change in our streaming experience. What does that mean? We’re not here just to serve viewers what I call ‘sugar’ – in other words all the popular hits that get us all talking – but as the first public service streamer we will use tech to present audiences with new, surprising content that might be outside their usual viewing habits, rather than just shows similar to what they’ve watched before. We achieve that by ensuring a mix of editorial curation and algorithmic recommendations.Yes, we need to enrich viewing experiences through tech enhancements, but we are equally clear that we will to retain our voice as a trusted curator. With so much noise in the market, retaining that voice is even more important.

This is amazing. It seems we are moving toward long-form video generation. With the speed of generating 1 picture every 10 milliseconds, we can generate 100 pictures in a second. A passable video can have 15 picture frames per second. To generate a 1-minute video (900 picture frames), it takes only 9 seconds. Then for a 10-minute video (a short movie), it only takes 90 seconds, which is merely one and a half minutes. It seems we are on the path to reach 20-minute length video generation by the end of this year. Personal movie generation is no longer a dream, but a reachable goal this year.
