Edgio is at IBC this week (Hall 5, stand 18). And, as the OTT streaming industry matures, it's great to see how Edgio is continuing to play a major role in the ecosystem: Edgio, Accedo, Bitmovin, Grabyo, and Vimond have formed a strategic partnership to address a growing need faced by media and entertainment. The big difference to past announcements is that Edgio is the helming the partnership as the managed service provider. This means Edgio will provide a single point of contact for all support needs, regardless of vendor. The goal is to, not only simplify the intricate processes associated with delivering and managing streaming workflows, but also help provide a frictionless entry into the market. "For media companies, piecing together an ecosystem like this on their own would be costly, time-consuming, and risky," said Eric Black, CTO and GM of Media for Edgio. “By bringing together companies at the forefront of streaming and managing the entire process under one service partner, media companies can focus on creating innovative content versus navigating the complexities of a streaming workflow.” Learn more.

It was a privilege to speak about how Ultra Low Latency Streaming Video (i.e., faster than broadcast TV) is enabled @ scale, obviously in the expected quality (what else will suffice?), by a CDN architecture that is built specifically for truly excellent live video streaming. As media consumption generally moves inexorably towards an all-streaming future, the latency of streaming video must match or be better than any App or Social Media platform that is simply reporting the score. I’m quite sure that no one wants to have an App tell them the score when the live video hasn’t yet reached that point (at least, I can declare that it bugs me whenever it happens!).
