💡 💡 💡 This essay from the The Brookings Institution brings together two thoughts that have crossed my mind and the minds of lots of those I have spoken to recently. 1️⃣ That scaling interventions, no matter their demonstrable impact, is not always sufficient to create systemic change. 2️⃣ The process of scaling interventions is a powerful way by which systemic change can be initiated. What I think the team has done so well here is to show how these thoughts can (and should) co-exist in all our minds and in our work, and have backed it up evidence and case studies (though I would love to read more!). The essay also highlights the need for complexity focused and participatory approaches to evidence generation, which can bring together this focus on what works and a focus on how complex and human systems change. ❓ This feels necessary, but a huge challenge for those of us working on evidence. Any thoughts or examples of how this can all be brought together? Have a read of the essay>>>>> https://lnkd.in/eSBvGvqW

📣 New report from the Center for American Progress out today 📣 In this report, Paige Shoemaker DeMio, MPA, Allie Pearce, and I explore key themes in state work-based learning legislation that recently passed and provide recommendations that target equity and access to these opportunities. "The modern economy requires more and more adaptation over the course of a person’s career, and exposing students to high-quality work-based learning opportunities helps set them up to be successful lifelong learners, whether they plan to attend college or head into the workforce upon graduation."

“The big takeaway is that this is not an individual-level problem, one for which faculty and staff members simply need to manage their calendar and work responsibilities more effectively to solve. Institutions must also ask themselves hard questions, such as: In what ways are our institutional infrastructures compounding the problem? What can we as institutional administrators do to ensure more equitable workloads for faculty and staff? What policies, practices and action steps must be created, implemented and assessed to establish boundary-setting and people’s well-being as core institutional values?”

🌟 Empowering Minds, Transforming Futures 🌟 It was great to volunteer as a speaker assistant at Canadian Association of College and University Student Services Conference 2024: Supporting Our Students; Sustaining Ourselves. The conference dived into how we can advocate for change for both our students and ourselves. It explored ways to transition from just sustaining to truly thriving, and shared practical strategies to strengthen and nourish our work and our teams. It’s all about advocating for students, providing holistic support, and honoring their diverse identities and perspectives. It was great to join this virtual gathering, engage in meaningful discussions, and learn from our incredible community. 📚 The insightful sessions I assisted with were: AI Tutor for Higher Education: What could it do, how it can help, and why would I want to deploy one – Robert W. National Facilitator at NCEE dedicated to supporting environments where our greatest assets, our youth, thrive, belong, and become more than ready for future life.
I've been reflecting greatly on the National Center for Education and the Economy’s latest research brief, "Thinking Differently About TIME." This powerful publication urges us to rethink various aspects of time in education, such as teaching time, school schedules, time for fostering student agency, and support for personalized learning. Additionally, this brief provides us robust examples of contexts, both nationally and globally, from which we can learn. https://bit.ly/3zCGyny As a National Facilitator, former principal, and professional learning developer, I found the insights on Teaching Time and how education systems balance time for teaching and non-teaching tasks and opportunities particularly impactful. One of the barriers we often hear to building capacity around the science of learning and development is the lack of time. What if we could reconsider the allocation of teaching and non-teaching time, as the examples in this brief have demonstrated, and essentially remove time as a barrier? With increased time for professional learning, teacher collaboration and planning, and action research and learning, imagine the possibilities for increased teacher agency and the subsequent impact on improved student outcomes! #LearningToLeading #ImpactInAction #EdResearch
