🌟while the title of the article is a bit misleading, I’ve seen the issue brought forth in the STEM research and schools’ practice. The issues: 🔍 Assumption of Acronym Familiarity: Don't alienate readers! Provide a definition to ensure inclusivity, clarity, and precision. #STEMAcronym 💡 Lack of Consistent Definition: Bridge the gap! Agree on a definition of STEM education. Prevent confusion and misinterpretation. #STEMEducationDefinition #ContextMatters 🔀 Inconsistent Terminology: Speak the same language! Use "STEM" consistently. Avoid mixing up subject names and teaching methods. #STEMTerminology #ClearCommunication 🎓 Misconception of Expertise: STEM Expertise ≠ STEM Ed Expertise! Understand the difference between STEM field knowledge and education skills. #STEMExpertise #EducationMatters 🌍 Implications for STEM Education: Raise the bar! Use of flawed research compromises teaching quality and hinders STEM literacy. Enhance practices and policy decisions by understanding the research in which policy is based upon. #STEMResearchImpact #hEducationPolicy 🌟💡 #STEMEducation #ResearchMatters #FutureLeaders
Research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics #STEM Education has, over the years, created an expansive repository of knowledge, fundamentally contributing to our understanding of effective teaching and learning practices. However, the quality and credibility of these research findings have recently been called into question, with mounting evidence suggesting a substantial number of these studies might be subjective, misleading or erroneous. https://lnkd.in/dzdqV-hJ

A new paper led by the Smithsonian Science Education Center, titled "The Network for Emergent Socio-Scientific Thinking (NESST): Collaboration for a shared transformative future through STEM Education," proposes a new type of impact network—an emergent network, housed at the Smithsonian Science Education Center. Using the lens of complexity theory and its concept of emergence, NESST can help individuals and organizations address the biggest global issues of our time as outlined by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This paper describes the Smithsonian's Network for Emergent Socio-Scientific Thinking (NESST) as one example of an emergent network. Find our published paper in the link below and learn more about NESST here: ssec.si.edu/nesst

On November 16, the National Science Board released the Higher Education in Science and Engineering report. The report found that from 2012-2021, the number of U.S. postsecondary S&E awards increased across all degree levels, and among underrepresented minority groups. However, as of 2021, American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, and Hispanic students were underrepresented among science and engineering certificate and degree award recipients at most award levels relative to their proportions of the U.S. population that was 20-34 years old. In fact, American Indian or Alaska Native students received fewer science and engineering degrees in 2021 than they did in 2012. The report includes trends by scientific field, degree level, and type of institution and can be read here: https://bit.ly/3Rjp7ih

#k12 and #highered have several National Science Foundation (NSF) funding opportunities to expand #stemeducation to meet our nation's current and emerging #stem #workforce demands. I love House Science Committee Chair Frank Lucas's quote: “As I like to remind people, the ‘chips’ portion of the bill will build factories today, but the ‘and science’ portion will build American technology for generations to come.” Arkansas Economic Development Commission's Jennifer Fowler is our state SME for all things CHIP-related and continues to elevate these opportunities. TY JF! The University of Arkansas Multi-User Silicon Carbide Research and Fabrication Facility (MUSiC) is an exemplar for connecting education, research, and industry for STEM. MUSiC, "a semiconductor research and fabrication facility, will produce microelectronic chips made with silicon carbide, a powerful semiconductor that outperforms basic silicon in several critical ways. The facility will enable the federal government – via national laboratories – businesses of all sizes, and other universities to prototype with silicon carbide, a capability that does not presently exist elsewhere in the U.S. Work at the facility will bridge the gap between traditional university research and the needs of private industry and will accelerate technological advancement by providing a single location where chips can go from developmental research to prototyping, testing and fabrication." For any teachers on here or if you know of any teachers, free $ up for grabs. Please note the deadline below: https://lnkd.in/gvt5NsSj Society for Science - STEM Research Grants Application. Here are step-by-step details on application submission: https://lnkd.in/g7XfAiZp STEM Research Grants provide support to Middle and High School teachers engaging their students in authentic scientific research. Over 6 years, $775,000 has been awarded to 367 teachers. Priority consideration is given to schools that support students from low-income communities and demographics underrepresented in STEM fields. Teachers can apply for up to $5,000 in funding to purchase specialized equipment, to receive a kit valued at $1,000 of pre-selected equipment, or both. If selected, a teacher will receive either funds or a kit, not both. For the purposes of this grant, a research project is defined as an independent investigation by a student involving experimentation to answer a scientific question outside of regular classwork. Independent research projects are frequently entered into science fairs and other competitions. Applications must be submitted as final before midnight ET on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 to be considered. https://lnkd.in/ga_dW7_a
