Seeking therapy before surgery isn't common practice here, therapy referrals tend to be more reactive. But most functional issues post surgery are predictable and addressing some of these issues can happen before surgery takes place. The benefits to this are; - Its easier to do exercises after surgery which you were familiarised with pre surgery. - setting up your home to optimise function during recovery is easier when your still at home. - learning about the recovery process will give you more control to navigate your recovery journey. All of the above can reduce length of admission and ultimately cost of care. In the spirit of promoting this gold standard of care Lifeweavers is offering a crazy price of $128 for a pre op session.

Looks like the average level of dissatisfaction after total knee replacement was overestimated in some studies at 20%(!). In this editorial on "X" the authors estimate that the number of patients dissatisfied after total knee replacement is 10%. One out of ten. We should use all of our treatment options that are safe and potentially effective before deciding on surgery. And if surgery is needed....we should maximize the outcomes by not just focusing on the technical aspects of the surgery. I think we are realizing that our patients measure success differently than we do sometimes! https://lnkd.in/guGkRfcp

Is Back Surgery performed too often? Here is another great video from Dr. Eric Bricker explaining the issues with the frequency of back surgeries performed in certain areas. Why is there such variation? Are some surgeons more aggressive in performing surgery? In my opinion, this is a great argument for getting a second opinion. This is an elective surgery not emergency surgery. And, some estimates are that at least 50% of back surgeries are unnecessary. Then why are they performed? There are probably a number of reason, but I have to believe one of them is the cost, or money that can be made in performing them. They are often one of the highest costs to most health plans. https://lnkd.in/gZRDwnDY
